Romania – Torn between work and home | DW Documentary
In the 1990s, many Romanians left their homeland in search of work. They left behind deserted villages: children were raised by their grandparents, the elderly lived alone, and communities fell apart.
Antoanela Andonescu — affectionately known to everyone as “Coca” — also left her homeland back then. She worked for decades in Italy as a geriatric nurse. “The harder I work, the sooner I can return,” she kept telling herself. But months turned into years. Her sisters followed her, and home faded into a memory.
When Coca finally returns to her small hometown of Bicaz in eastern Romania, she brings her savings with her — and a new sense of responsibility. She establishes a nursing home for the elderly who were left behind during the great wave of emigration. Almost all the residents in her nursing home have children abroad: Former cement factory worker Vasile has lived here since his family moved to Western Europe.
During an outing with her residents to Lake Bicaz, Coca becomes pensive: “I don’t know how my life would have turned out if I had stayed.” Her own story is representative of an entire generation — torn between their roots and a new beginning.
While Coca has found her way back to her native land, her nieces’ lives have long been rooted in Italy. In the Ostia region near Rome, where some 250,000 Romanians now live, a new home has emerged. Coca’s niece Andra has put down roots there — and wonders how much Romania will still shape her young daughter, Gizelle. What remains of one’s origins when life takes you to a new place? And what does home mean in a world where families are parted by continents?
This documentary tells a story of farewells, new beginnings, and the search for belonging — and of people who, despite all the upheavals, are redefining their sense of home.

As a romanian, you guys made a real documentary. I hope to see more types of these video because here are the last workers from comunism and they have their story with that industry
Congratulations to Coca and her sisters 💪🏽😇🇷🇴
..as a romanian living abroad for 7 years, I can relate with all the feelings of all the people talking on this beautiful documentary, it is an eternal internal battle between our soul (inside Romania) and our necesities (outside Romania)..
Good subject, DW 👏🏽🙏🏽
Coca, esti un exemplu pentru români! Asa ar trebui sa facem pentru bătrânii noștri.
I had the chance to live in Romania in 2015. They were the best years of my life. I always remember with longing. You have a very beautiful country and very valuable people. I always felt at home during the time I lived there. I look forward to visiting there. I will probably visit next year. I'm not a Romanian, but a part of me always feels like I belong there. I was very moved when I saw this video.
Had to switch off when they started playing the horror Romanian music, and discussing the inhaling of contaminants in the factory, my Ro neighbors (Not Roma) used to play it and burn their plastic rubbish in the garden until they got fined for both.
I returned to Romania 5 years ago. Life is really good here for me.
I left Romania when I was 5 and have lived in the US ever since. My heart has never stopped longing to move back one day, but every time I visit I’m left with a feeling like “I don’t belong here; there’s nothing here for me.” And still, I never want to leave and as soon as I get back to the US again I start planning how I can make a life for myself there. I have never shed more tears than for the life I never got to live in my ancestral homeland, but I work hard every day towards one day returning.
I am an African national and I so very appreciate the work this precious lady is doing for the elderly💜 I have always loved taking care of elderly and hope I can form an assisted living community one day🙏🏽
The main export of Romania for the last 35 years was people. Their own children…
God bless Coca 💝
Romania is a lost cause , and that's a Romanian saying it ….
Moldavia is in the east not west?
❤
Over the years, many locals have immigrated to Italy, Spain, Germany for work and a better life . . . . .
Now that Romania's economy is doing fairly well, migrants are coming to the country.
What a gorgeous place! I would think many people would return in retirement. I would think it much cheaper to retire in Romania.
Amazing what wonderful work Coca is doing!!! The sweet blond girl who shared her tears & fears " good for you stick to your guns…your friends & family may want you close, But its your life and I agree, remain where YOUR HAPPY. Not where people think you could be happy…You only get one life and enjoy what ever you choose to do and where!!
It's a beautiful country, I was there with a youth orchestra about a decade ago. A real shame to hear about the corruption and so on. I hope countries like this and all countries generally can begin to flourish again. People like Coca can be a big inspiration to those yearning to someday return. Good luck Romania, good luck humanity 🌞🤲🍀
I wish they’ll stop the English voice, the translation is not good
I sent this one to a Romanian friend of mine, she lives in Egypt ❤ i will watch the arabic version as i drink my moroccan tea ❤ lots of love from Morocco to Germany
Lots of us have emigrated all over the world just because of the money. The country is really beautiful, but the corruption and miserably low salaries have pushed millions to leave, creating empty towns like Bicaz.. what a shame. But, indeed we all hope to return home one day.
Well done !
❤ This womans Heart ❤
not bad at Coca❤👏👏👏
Bless Coca! Great, strong woman
Va iubesc.
