Shadow of the Hawk: A Mystical Journey Through Native American Folklore
"Shadow of the Hawk" (1976) is a captivating blend of supernatural adventure and Native American spiritualism that captures the zeitgeist of 1970s cinema. Directed by the talented Don McBrearty, this film stars Jan-Michael Vincent as Mike, a jaded city dweller who embarks on a transformative journey with his grandfather, played by the legendary Chief Dan George, who acts as a tribal shaman.
The narrative draws the viewer into the haunting and beautiful Canadian wilderness, where the shimmering natural landscapes serve as both a backdrop and a character in their own right. Mike, initially skeptical of his heritage, must confront both his disbelief and an ancient evil spirit that threatens his people. This journey of self-discovery is punctuated by eerie visions and a series of encounters with dark forces that blend the road trip genre with elements of spiritual horror.
As Mike and his grandfather navigate haunted forests, the film artfully interweaves themes of cultural identity, generational wisdom, and the battle against malevolent spirits. The performances are heartfelt, with Chief Dan George lending a soulful quality to his role that resonates deeply, while Vincent captures the internal conflict of a man reacquainting himself with his roots.
With its atmospheric score, vivid cinematography, and a melding of traditional practices with modern dilemmas, "Shadow of the Hawk" stands out as a unique entry in the genre. It’s a part coming-of-age tale, part creepshow, serving both as a chilling horror experience and a poignant reminder of the importance of cultural heritage and spiritual connection.

Though definitely sometimes a bit cornyy, this is a fun film to watch. A good example of the sorts of films that came out in the 1970s attempting to express the growing desire to understand those cultures that had maintained a closer connection to the spirit of the Earth. Many of those films were rather corny … and yet I enjoyed watching them then, and I enjoyed watching this now.
Thank you for uploading this I watched it with my late mom once ,and we both loved it
Yes i seen him in a movie with clint Eastwood
One of the cheesiest movies I've seen in a while. It excels itself in thinness of plot and di stunt shelf special effects.
The ability of that sweater to endure bears and wolves and fire without scratch or scar. Wow…

Chief Dan George is the only reason i watched………
The premise is good and I do love a good mystery . The dialogue is poor. But, I love Chief Dan George he's making the whole thing worth wading through. One scene with his face is enough to keep me there..
