“She did the right thing” – US Secret Service chief resigns in wake of Trump shooting controversy

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned following the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. Politicians from both sides of the political spectrum have expressed support for her decision to step down. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated, “We have to rebuild the American people’s faith and trust in the Secret Service as an agency.” Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman also noted that her resignation was necessary due to a lack of information provided during her testimony to Congress.

Cheatle had been facing pressure to resign amid investigations into how the shooter was able to get close to Trump at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Her resignation has led to Deputy Director Ronald Rowe being appointed as acting director by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Moving forward, the Secret Service will need to work on rebuilding trust and addressing security concerns to prevent future incidents.
