On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered poignant remarks at a commemorative event in Edmonton, Alberta, underscoring the need for collective remembrance and action regarding Canada’s painful history with Indigenous peoples. This significant day serves to honor survivors of the residential school system and to memorialize the countless Indigenous children who were lost, a harrowing chapter in the nation’s narrative between 1857 and 1996.
Over this lengthy period, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and communities, forced into church-run, government-funded residential schools, where conditions were often dire. The abuses experienced in these institutions—ranging from physical and emotional harm to severe neglect—cast a long shadow over Indigenous communities that persists today.
Carney emphasized the necessity of acknowledging the full spectrum of Indigenous history in Canada, urging Canadians to confront the uncomfortable realities alongside the cultural beauty. He said, “We shouldn’t admire the beadwork and forget the children that were forced into uniforms. We shouldn’t honour the drum and ignore the years that it was made to fall silent.” This call for a balanced historical perspective is paramount in the journey toward reconciliation.
Addressing the Liberal government’s ongoing efforts to mend the rift created by this legacy, Carney admitted, “The gaps are still large, but we are responding.” His remarks echo the sentiment that while significant strides have been made, much work remains to achieve true reconciliation with Indigenous communities.
As Canadians gather to reflect on this day, Carney’s words serve as a reminder that understanding and acknowledgment are the first steps toward healing and building a more inclusive future. The path to reconciliation is a shared journey, one that requires commitment from all Canadians, to ensure the memories of those lost are honored and never forgotten.

It's surf and recreation day already?
All based on lies.
I love how the government was the only one that got it off, and they're the ones responsible for oppressing the Natives.
🙏
I think most Canadians have other things to worry about than this. The economy for instance, the housing, the cost of food, gas, immigration, crime, health care, the grift from this government. The word truth should not be spoken by this constant liar.
Celebrate or ignore grifters day sept 30
It's a holiday. The first nations don't have to get up and go to work!!!!!
When it comes to white guilt, I'm all tapped out, thanks
Millions were treated like trash by the Canadian education system including violent beatings and death…And these didnt happen in residential schools…They happened down the street….ANY street…( from 1900 until the early sixties….) Millions had it real rough , and we've never had a hand out for what happened to us , or our ancestors…Truth and Reconciliation is an embarrassment , and a grift by extortionists and their lawyers , based on a blatant lie…And at the end of the day , Mark Carney is a fraud and a liar…As we all have seen , several times over…
Somebody show some sort of truth.
Not one hole
Not one body
Not one bone
Trudeau's surf and recreation will always be remembered.
I wonder how many of these grieving victims are sober?
It is hate speech to claim that White, Christian teachers murdered hundreds of indigenous children and buried them in mass graves when there is zero evidence this ever happened. This anti-Christian, anti-White bigotry has been expressed in over 100 Christian churches burned/heavily vandalized. How many of these aronists have been arrested?

No guilt here… the strong survice and weak die… its human nature…
White, Yellow, Black, Red, it is the same for all. Talk is cheap, so listen to what people do, not to what they say they'll do. That is truth and if truth is Justice, then that is Justice.
The End. Good-Luck and Good-Bye.
nope, not reconciling for things i didnt do. i have no feelings toward it.
It would be helpful if the racists were actually prosecuted for their hate speech and hate crimes. Just looking through the disgusting comments on here is sickening.😡
Anything on the truck running over people during the parade in tawasan?
Thank You Prime Minister.
Well deserved for a people that are part of CANADA 🍁 STRONG AS WE REMEMBER WE ARE REBUILDING IN TRUTH OF THEN NOW AND FORWARD
🎉👏👏
Unbelievable racist trolls on here. Grow a heart and a brain. Canada is a colonial nation state that CONTINUES to oppress Indigenous people, both on Turtle Island and overseas with mining development and more. Y'all are threatened by the truth and you've deluded yourselves. Imagine saying you care about children and then accuse survivors of lying. Absolutely disgusting. Shame on all of you.
The truth is a lot of incredibly serious things were said, the only evidence so far disproved the claims. Our government wants us to feel guilt, they gave away 200 million tax dollars, churches across canada burned, people died. The reconciliation involves the Canadian government apologizing for the damage they have done to it's own population, the shame it brought us on a global stage, and the damage they did to the Christian community. Bad things were done to the indigenous population, I don't know anyone who refutes that. But that DOES NOT give them justification to make these baseless claims and reap financial benefits from it. Truth is no longer a subjective term, truth is now synonymous with narrative.
Let me know when there is some truth to be found…
12 of 95 recommendations done. 1 must be to give govt workers a day off.
Govt hired Dr Bryce to do study of schools. He did a report stating kids are dying and govt and churches ignored it. This is the truth.
40 billion a year for the past decade, the month of June, a weekend in June, a day in September…. When can we stop this nonsense and become Canadians again
THE TEARING DOWN OF WHAT WAS ONCE A GREAT COUNTRY, IN FULL VIEW
By the time Justin Trudeau’s failed government had run its course, the country was already buckling. The evidence was not hidden. It was broadcast daily in the cost of living, in housing no one could afford, in a decline most Canadians could feel long before they could name it. And yet, rather than confront how deep the damage actually went, many of the same supporters simply carried their loyalty forward, propping up the very mechanism responsible for the collapse. The face at the podium changed. The mechanism did not, and neither did their willingness to defend it.
History will read: Trudeau broke the country with neglect. Carney finished the job with intent, selling off what was left, piece by piece, to whoever was buying. The ones who were awake watched in disgust, with no power to stop it, while the ones who were asleep could clearly be seen waving flags at their own funeral. Canada would never recover. Canada will forever read as a cautionary tale.
At what point does a voter start bearing some part of the blame? It is not even an afterthought, even though it is fact.

noble thought but in order for this day to have any meaning Natives need to acknowledge a solid truth. After 5 years and million$ given to them for excavation – money is gone – no one knows where – and further scans/exploration confirms 0 bodies at any Residential Schools. When Indigenous finally speak this truth THEN there can be truth and reconciliation.
Ah, marky hits the mark again. All the right words, all the right phrases. Doesn't care one lick about what he says, just makes sure he hits all the talking points. Just like his fiscal policy ramblings and his "elbows up" drivel.
God bless mark Carney !!!
Mark Carney best prime minister of Canada nobody else !!!
Mark Carney is doing his best for Canada and well respected all over the world !!!
Mark not even Canadian he lives in Ireland never ever pay taxes in Canada he and his wife Diana invest millions with Trump family. Mark and Brookfield making billions while Canadians mothers has to choose pay rent or buy grocery for their kids across the country
when will the 12 mil be returned?
I never met a white person that said “my Grandma was a nun” or “my Granddad was a priest” in residential schools. It is as if they never told them. Cause at least they could be like “back when I worked at the residential schools, this never happened” but I’ve never heard a white person deny these truths from experience. That’s why every time a white person speaks it comes from ignorance and arrogance.
I am a mixed person that is indigenous, white, and black and i feel VERY comfortable speaking to and about every one of those ethnic groups.
happy hug a chug day
I don’t give a FLYING F**K. Where is the physical evidence I’ve heard tons of stories, but not any single evidence that the abuse in the schools actually happened. When is the constant money taking going to stop!
My extended came from Sri Lanka, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Iran, and Italy to this country to find a better life. We have earned tons of land, and now all the land is stolen, and we don’t actually own it. It goes to bunch of Indigenous people that passed centuries ago. Land is NOT stolen, it is conquered. Land only belongs to people that have the means to defend it, own it, and live in it.
The gov n catholic church ate RESPONSIBLE for all these injustices. And now we have to feel terrible ? Hahaha. Ok hypocrites
ICarney can’t be bothered to stand for veterans of Afghanistan at the Oilers game. But we’re supposed to believe his words here actually mean something when he couldn’t be bothered to get off his butt for veterans.
Trudeau and Harper did not much so Carney could still outdo them just by getting a reserve clean water and working roads
Mark Carney is doing his best for Canada and well respected all over the world !!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Stop the genocide of canadians
Pray for all those killed and injured. Pray also for those who carried this out – church and state. ❤ 🙏
reconciliation requires two equally guilty parties coming together to initiate an agreement of how to make amends and treat each other with respect and fairness. hence, this approach can not be utilized in canada, whereby one side was the perpetrator and the other, the victim. the victim has nothing to reconcile about. the truth aspect of it though merits credit….never forget their essence. also, how can you reconcile given that the system still imposes european imperial and colonial notions on indigenous communities such as: the concepts of indigenous flag and indigenous nation, naming cities after indigenous tribes so to rub salt in the wound, and through land acknowledgment strategy of reminding everyone who the oppressor is and who the oppressed are? more so, what does the artificial indigenous flag have to do with the pride flag to be placed on the same canvas?
Please pass the laws to protect against Residential school denialism in order to put an end to this particular infliction of pain. Laws were placed to ban all manner of things to found this country. That's a fact. This is not a ludicrous ask; it is a humane one, based on fact. And HEART.
Lets go Canada. Time to calm the waters, we've created.
Time to plant some good seeds. Solid foundations.
And this, is done, for who? For all of us. We do this for all of us.
It's a big ask. Because we created, a big mess. A big mess of pain. A big mess of hate quite frankly and the lack of this law, enables it to continue. Unacceptable.
Pay your taxes and we will consider your reconciliation
What a joke! Government workers shouldnt have a day off today!
NOT ONE body found.
