South Carolina carried out its first execution in 13 years on Friday, as 46-year old prisoner Freddie Owens was put to death for the 1997 killing of a convenience store clerk. Owens had been on death row for over two decades for the brutal murder.
The execution, which was carried out by lethal injection, marked a significant moment for the state, which had not executed a prisoner since 2011. The decision to move forward with Owens’ execution came after years of legal battles and appeals, with the state Supreme Court ultimately ruling that the execution could proceed.
Owens was convicted of the murder of convenience store clerk Danny Watson, who was shot and killed during a robbery in 1997. The case garnered national attention at the time, and Owens’ trial was highly publicized due to the violent nature of the crime.
Despite Owens’ legal team’s efforts to appeal his death sentence, the state Supreme Court ultimately upheld the decision to execute him. The execution was carried out with Owens’ family present, as well as witnesses to the crime and representatives from the victim’s family.
The execution has reignited the debate over the death penalty in South Carolina, with advocates on both sides of the issue speaking out. While some believe that the death penalty is a necessary form of justice for heinous crimes, others argue that it is an outdated and inhumane practice.
As Owens’ execution marks a turning point for the state, it remains to be seen what impact it will have on the future of the death penalty in South Carolina.

Kamala, Kamala, where for art tbou Kamala? 😂
They killed an innocent MAN!!!! Didn’t Worry About What The People WHO WERE REALLY THERE ThINK Because They Have To AMiTE ThEy WERE wrong!!!
What took so long? The death penalty should be carried out within five years
Shame on you South Carolina. May GOD have mercy on his and your soul.
Freddie Owens was not innocent, he killed 2 people. This is why I don't trust national news. They are trying to place doubt in people's minds about Freddie Owens killing Irene Graves. NBC conveniently left out the part that when he was on a 24-hour hold, he killed his cellmate, Christopher Bryan Lee, who was just there for a minor traffic offense. Mr Lee's life mattered too.
Another racist Slave State governor getting off on executing a Black man he KNOWS is innocent. Where do they keep digging these anti-human monsters up? And how can we shut that Pipeline of Hate down for good?
Genesis 9 and Romans 13!
Pro Life my…
The fools who whine about cruel and unusual punishment need to look up what the founding fathers were referring to.
SC just killed an innocent man.
The real criminals (in this age of DNA testing) are the judicial activists & cowards who refuse to apply/enforce the law & penalties on the books, that are supported by the citizens of the State…
Forcing taxpayers to pay MILLIONS over a 30-year period to support repeated trials (along with the healthcare, meals, guards, etc) of a killer—rather than carrying out his sentence in a timely manner is outrageous—to both taxpayers & to the victim’s relatives…
A “30 Year Delay” in implementing the penalty ruling isn’t “justice,” but a mockery of it : “Justice delayed is justice denied.”
bye
Just like the Central Park Five Criminals that were released, they were not Innocent or "Exonerated" One of them who actually R-ped the Woman feared what other Prisoners were going to do to him when they learned who he was, so to establish Cred he 'Took the Rap" for the Actual R-pe but some of them helped hold down the Victim, Ripped Her clothes off and someone smashed her Head with an Iron Gas Pipe. They brutally attacked at least four People, it was Racially motivated. One of them actually told a Police Captain (the Police knew nothing of the R-pe) after they were Arrested for a Vicious attack on a Man Jogging.
That's why I don't believe in the death penalty…, guilty as well as the innocent dies. The justice system isn't perfect never has been and the ultimate punishment to innocent people at any percentage it's not acceptable to me, some are willing to take that gamble because it only effect that person you are accusing/looking at it's never you.
His innocence was proven by dna! Y’all ain’t gonna care unless it affects you somehow!
And it had to be a black man … typical
He was guilty but the MSM is up to their usual tricks
Many prosecutors have more murders under their belts than the people they prosecute.
What is the message they’re trying to deliver executing a black man now
No, he wasn’t
he killed a black woman
Sadly, Kamala Harris is part of the great replacement. They are going to replace Black people with legal immigrants. abortion and capital management is the way they’re gonna manage it.
I don’t believe in the death penalty.
😥😥😥
Consequences for bad behavior, sounds good to me.
Bye bye
And guess what? It's w BLACK MAN!!!
Deleted Criminals dont re-offend…
Omg they executed him 😩😖😖
How do we put Trump on the SC list?
Why'd he wait sooooooo long to come forward?? GTHOH
May GOD have mercy on his soul and of the victim. I dont think he did it
OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE MOST GERRYMANDERED STATE. SHAMEFUL
IN LIEU OF PAYING TAXES.
👏👏👏👏
Pro-life means one favors life at every stage, not just the beginning.
So they didn't say it in the article, but i just fact checked because i saw other comments. This guy did indeed commit another murder while incarcerated. Christopher Bryan Lee was serving a 90 day sentence for drunk driving whn he was killed in less than 24 hours of being made cellmates with this guy. Seems like Freddie earned his due here.
