In the nineteen thirties, miners near Ottosdal, South Africa, cracked open pale Wonderstone and found something that looked completely out of place: small, metallic-looking spheres sealed inside the rock. Some were barely half a centimeter across. Others were nearly the size of a cricket ball. Many looked almost perfectly round. And many bore something that stopped the miners cold: crisp, parallel grooves around their middle, like seams on a manufactured ball. The rock around them was about three billion years old.
