Student protesters in Bangladesh demand resignation of Prime Minister Hasina

Tens of thousands of students and their supporters have gathered in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The mass protests were sparked by a violent crackdown on demonstrations against government job quotas, resulting in the deaths of over 200 people.

Prime Minister Hasina, who has been in power for a long time, has been credited with overseeing an economic upswing that benefitted many poor, predominantly Muslim Bangladeshis. However, recent high inflation has made life difficult for the population, which surpasses 170 million people and faces high unemployment rates.

In addition to economic challenges, human rights organizations have accused Hasina of targeting her political opponents and critics, leading to the arrest of thousands of individuals. Critics argue that freedom of speech and press freedom have suffered under her government.

The ongoing protests in Bangladesh have underscored growing discontent with the current administration and its handling of both economic and political issues. As students and their supporters continue to demand change, the future of the country remains uncertain amid escalating tensions.
