Superintendent confirms crashed BC school bus carrying grade 6 and 7 students

A school bus carrying grade 6 and 7 students from 100 Mile Elementary and Horse Lake Elementary schools in B.C.’s Cariboo region was involved in a serious crash on Highway 97 on Friday afternoon, resulting in dozens of injuries. School District 27 Superintendent Chris van der Mark stated that the well-being of the students and staff is their primary focus, and thankfully, the injuries sustained were not as severe as they could have been.

The group of students and adults were returning from an overnight field trip at Gavin Lake when the bus veered off the highway and down an embankment. With 31 students and four adults on board, the incident has raised concerns about safety and transportation regulations for school trips.

The death of a pedestrian in the same location shortly after the crash is also under investigation, adding to the tragic events of the day. The community is coming together to support those affected by the crash, and efforts are being made to ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
