Superpower or escape from reality: What is maladaptive daydreaming? | DW Documentary
Many people daydream. But excessive daydreaming can become a burden. This is because the exaggerated mental digressions, termed Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD), often get in the way of real life.
Protagonists Amber, Sian and Dušan share their experiences, living lives cut off from reality. Combining intimate interviews with scenes from their day-to-day lives, ‘My Dark Beautiful World’ not only reveals what Amber, Sian and Dušan daydream about, but also documents their journey towards coming back to reality, unpacking what it is they’re really escaping from along the way.
Although the fantasies in daydreams can also help to organize thoughts, reduce stress, process events and wishes and inspire creativity, the film shows that ‘too much of a good thing’ prevents people from mastering their everyday lives and completing important tasks. And if the hopes expressed in daydreams aren’t fulfilled, it can even be a trigger for depression.

And is getting not better the more people we are the harder we have to work for a living
According to Neville Goddard, imagination is the only reality. The 'real life' /3D reality is just a reflection of that. But if this is true why aren't these daydreamers manifesting their daydreams?
Practicing mindfulness is the key to stop maladaptive day-dreaming, just learn to be with yourself
I daydream a lot but noticed all of it are power fantasies, can't think of any character I created other than different versions of me doing different things with the world.
Uplod Hindi dubbed 😢😢
The mind is the only place we can be free in
is this a D&D ad?
Thoreau wrote: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when it came time to die discover that I had not lived.”
This life can be boring or troubling, but we have to go through that to get to reality which is this amazing world.
Nice typo…
Worst documentary I've ever seen playing with people's feelings. It's not a business it's really harmful
As a child who grew up as a loner this would be my go to place especially when I had time and space., there were times i would walk 10km as a 9y/o from school to home all because i lost my transport fare, all the way i would let my mind go wild with day dreaming about fictional characters, sci-fi worlds before i knew it i was home, explains why fitness hasn't been too much of an today.
Even late into my teenage i had made an elaborate league with with Beyblade tazos, the spinners, divided into 8 teams and different competions. Sank hours into that. To date i have the records of who won what… Obviously there were some biases involved.
Past 20y/o day dreaming has long gone. Real life is firmly in control.
wow amazing documentary.
Now I understand myself better
What I miss in this documentary is an overarching framework that puts the various interviews into context with the psychological interpretation, social consequences, number of percentages… right now we just listen to people talking about their daydreaming, but it's all their perspective, which naturally is skewed.
Actually we can daydream collectively. We have done it in the times of religions and renaissances. We could try to go to heaven in this real world because this is the only reality we all have, mind-bogglingly. Instead we are having this dystopia. We all want a better future for us, but we struggle to see that others want that too, and and even we do, somehow we think that their wishes are harmful for ours. So stupid that humanity hasn't learnt to procreate, daydream and verbalise them together, in fact, there is a place for all. All the ways lead to death, but what end do we want? Why leave everything (I mean to feel better, to calm down) for the "afterlife" that was just a dream we have been visualising throughout human history? What could be different in "heaven" in the "afterlife"? There still would be us? Stupid, egoistic, individualistic? Nah. Heaven is the aspiration we have all been striving for. It can happen in real world and life, it's about verbalising our dreams. We don't believe that things can get great for all that is real, we discredit it calling it utopia, it is the collective fear that things could go radically opposite. Just that. But there is a huge chance things could be great, it has been.
I am also like this. There are so many things happening in my surrounding so daydreaming is my escape.
Good film
I daydream everday, most often before trying to sleep. I always sleep awful, barely any deep sleeping phases, always feeling kind of concious that I'm not really asleep, always tired. So before I actually try to sleep, I will listen to my favourite music and come up with all sorts of scenarios in my favourite fictional world (mostly final fantasy 14). This can last almost 3 to 4 hours,, sometimes even more. If I could I would probably be in that world in my head 24/7. i have no attachment and mostly hate for the real world. There is no real reason for me to be there. Gaming and ficitional worlds are basically the only things that keeps me alive.
They always come up with some new form of kookiness or other that no one's ever heard of before from time to time, don't they? It keeps the psychoanalytic business alive. Soon they will invent some new medication for it, because the medico-pharmaceutical industry must be kept alive too.
There was a time when these people were just called nothings and nobodies whom nobody gave a second glance to, and that was perfectly alright because society needed nothings and nobodies in the background so that the somethings and somebodies could show off.
That's sad
I think most of us all go through such a period in our lives especially if we have too much time on our hands or something triggering happens in our lives then we go back to that
I supposed we ought to find ways to cope like gym, writing, volunteering etc
This is how ukrainians live,in their dark beautiful world where death is only just around the corner, they find themselves daily in this same state of mind because of the war,and these people lead normal lives?.
I appreciate the openness and honesty of these people. It's the first step to heal. And by being brave to share this, it can help others. So thank you.
As a creative individual I dream constantly. Most of my energies are then taken up attempting to implementing just one of those dreams and it's very hard work…… then another comes along and you start again. There is a significant difference between fantasies and dreams.
i am totally enlightened by this beautiful piece of film making all aspects are there and its quite emotional to even know about this these people their lives lived and living just so well done im going to be thinking on this for quite a while not as a daydream but a human condition thank you
