Teens Innovate Detection and Treatment for Lyme Disease Using CRISPR
In a groundbreaking initiative, a team of ambitious teens from a Georgia high school is taking their innovative spirit to the iGEM competition—often dubbed the “science Olympics.” Their project aims to revolutionize the detection and treatment of Lyme disease through the power of CRISPR gene editing technology.
Lyme disease, commonly transmitted through tick bites, poses a significant health threat worldwide, with increasing cases reported each year. Traditionally, diagnosing this condition can be challenging, leading to delays in treatment and complications. This is where these young scientists come in with their cutting-edge approach, leveraging CRISPR to enhance both rapid detection and treatment methodologies.
Their project stands as a testament to the potential of young minds to address real-world health issues using advanced biotechnology. By harnessing the precision of CRISPR, they aim to create a more efficient, accurate testing method, as well as explore novel treatments that could potentially change the landscape of Lyme disease management.
The story of these teen innovators not only highlights their scientific endeavors but also emphasizes the importance of youth engagement in STEM fields. As they prepare to showcase their work on an international stage, they represent a new generation ready to tackle some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.
Catch the full story of these remarkable teens and their CRISPR-based innovations in Lyme disease detection and treatment in the upcoming video on “60 Minutes.”

It is in the culture, knowledge changes destiny.
PATENT!🎉
Congrats, Lambert!!! I have worked in clinical research lab science for over 5 years now and at 27, I always hoped there would be a greater interest in lab science. Good to see the kids are all right!!!
Too bad this "administration" is a joke.
We should also focus on the changing of the guard. We need new young leadership in the United States that can move this country forward instead of trying to defund everything.
These students make me feel hopeful for our future. When my daughter was young, she was bit by a tick. Fortunately, she had the classic bullseye rash. We were able to prevent it turning into the disease. What an honor to compete against students from around the world and to get acknowledged for your outstanding work. The future looks bright for these students
Benefits of AI LLMs to get a boost like writing software.
Government needs to fund it more, obviously
Thanks for sharing Liza …I've tested for Lymes for 2.yrs in a row now
china has all the money, of course they can send 120 teams. our country is in debt to china while we educate their kids
Shout out to the amazing teachers
Young people deserve to have a great education. I'm in awe of what this team has done. I would love all schools to have this dedication and the funding so everyone can make the kitchen bright for all. It doesn't just have to be in science.
Amazing!!! 🙌💚
Kids today…
Interesting all these smart, driven kids are from Asian immigrants. In the majority of America teachers unions demand more money and pay yet the quality of their output has fallen to where they’re graduating American legacy kids that can’t read or do basic math at an 8th grade level. God help our country.
Stay hungry people. Keep asking why not and then go do it.
Even the USA students are of Asian decent. Interesting
FDA has azlocillin approved since 2020 but it is not available for use. Why?
@renmakesmusic
This is amazing.I always hear about the research but never see any real doctors using these treatments to help their patients.I think Drs need to be retrained in Lyme and tick illnesses. If this would happen a lot more patients would have more hope to recover using these methods.Especially since a lot of families are suffering including mine.
Anybody else think it's funny that the top comments are all about lymes, but the subtext is that the US is losing it's grasp on scientific achievement in the 21st century?
Current administration may not like these students
I have lyme , it did a number on my joints.
Im praying these brilliant students can perfect cartilage regrowth. My lyme gave me bone on bone knee joints, I can’t walk. There’s a cartilage reqrowth called MACI (matrix induced autolougous chondrocyte implementation ) . It needs refined and improved. Especially for people who have NO CARTILAGE LEFT.
we are the future!!! teenagers are the future!!! children are the future!!!🩷🩷🩷 congrats to these amazing individuals.
This is the best piece of 60 minutes I’ve ever seen and I have been watching this show for years. It’s hopeful for the future.
It's so scary and sickening to see how far behind America is becoming in education, science, and critical thinking. I cannot fathom why this current Administration and its followers think it's so great to be cutting funding from these programs so that the richest few can get richer. America is only hurting Itself by letting the radical right take away such future opportunities. I so wish something like this had been offered at my high school
Can you do this for PANDAS?
Splendid. Funding is money well spent. Shame no reference to Jennifer Doudna or Emmanuelle Charpentier.
This is amazing. I’ve had Lyme and co-infections since I was 11. Thank you for all of your dedication and hard work in fighting this complex illness 💚
I wish people from both the left and the right, and both Republican and Democrats, realize that the future of the United States of America lies in immigrants with this level of passion for science and technology.
America’s current standing is a result of past generations that is passing away.
Trump is an idiot
Asia has 10x more high schoolers in this type of competitions? That’s not a statistic — it’s an alarm bell. Time for urgent action.
We almost lost our Blue Heeler to Lyme's recently. We were very fortunate that our Vet was on top of it and treated him aggressively. He is now back to his happy self!!
Lyme's is a seriously nasty disease!!!
If we (here in the US) just raised standards progressively & FLOOD THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH CAPITAL in a generation we could have a society with no parallel in science research and discovery.
Did you notice something?
It's good to see high schoolers making a difference. However, I don't see one white person in the bunch.
Good luck with that since Trump is against education in general, he’s not all that keen on cutting edge gene science and neither is he all that keen on
Non-White Caucasians. 😮🤔
Don’t release any of these brilliant young people’s names. Trump will cut funding for educational institutions and also deport the kids.
Only an idiot whold cut the funding to a program like this. These kids, all of them, give me hope.
This is awesome!
What exactly is “extraneous genetic material” they are snipping away??
This will be the height of their recognition and ability. They have nothing in their future. China will make us all look like fools.
And trump cut funding to this…..God he's driving our country straight to hell .
Where does science innovation become DEI. Its research.
Amazing episode! This caught my attention because my son and other family members have battled Lymes disease but I am sooo impressed by this HS program. Congrats and way to go students, teachers, and parents!
This is something good that will help countless people… so of course Trump wants to sabotage it.
I didn’t see the end where funding was cut due to DEI
