After 20 years in power, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled Bangladesh amidst widespread protests, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s political landscape. The resignation came in the wake of a violent crackdown on dissent by her government, which resulted in the deaths of several hundred people and sparked public outrage.
What initially began as student demonstrations against job quotas quickly escalated, leading to the dissolution of parliament and the release of opposition leaders. With the military stepping in to set up an interim government, many are now speculating on who will lead the nation next and how stability can be restored without compromising demands for greater democracy.
On the latest episode of Inside Story, presenter Laura Kyle delves into the implications of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the future of Bangladesh with a panel of experts. Human rights activist Shireen Huq, founding member of women’s rights organization Naripokkho, offers insights into the challenges and opportunities ahead. Najib Rahman, a member of the political party Jemaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, provides a political perspective on the unfolding events. Additionally, Nadine Shaanta Murshid, Associate Professor of Social Work at the University at Buffalo, brings her expertise on Bangladesh to the discussion.
As Bangladesh enters uncharted territory, the focus is on how to navigate the transition to a new leadership while addressing the grievances of the public. The protesters are adamant about not allowing the military to rule and are calling for a solution that upholds democratic values. The nation stands at a crossroads, with the path forward uncertain but ripe with possibilities for change.
The resignation of Sheikh Hasina has sparked a wave of uncertainty but also a sense of hope for a better future. The eyes of the nation are now turned towards who will emerge as the next leader and how they will guide Bangladesh towards a more stable and democratic future.

India has sheltered Hasina, terrorists, and killers for over 30 years. How can Hasina, who lived in India for over 20 years and was funded by India, be allowed to run for PM in Bangladesh in the first place?

it's a golden day for Bangladesh.
What’s next?
After the swiftly successful U.S.-instigated regime change operation in Bangladesh, the interim government will necessarily comprise of various hand-picked neo-liberal stooges of the U.S.
The student protest movement itself which began as a legitimate protest of anti-quota grievances soon morphed into something rather more sinister, I.e. the protests were manipulated and transformed by local and outside actors into a campaign to forcibly overthrow Sheikh Hasina’s government. The wicked plan succeeded spectacularly. Now, the student leaders will soon be quickly sidelined and silenced, with the military holding sway. Slick elections will eventually be held with favored party and candidates winning. This will of course be hailed as a historic restoration of real democracy in Bangladesh. The public will be duly duped and play along. Debilitating neo-liberal economic policies will follow. And those celebrating and virtue-signaling to each other right now will sorely miss the former PM and her era.
The guests, particularly the two ladies here are typical misguided critics who are pandering to Bangladeshi audiences and their own Western backers to denounce Hasina – without realising that for all her faults and sins, Hasina’s ouster portends a very bleak future for the country. You all are going to regret what you wished for.
What’s more wanted…good development…better economy…good GDP …what more these people want…when student’s demands are met, they should have silently withdrawn from foreign inspired forces, BNP, Jamaiti Islam and kept away…these idiots have been used by external forces to radicalize Bangladesh. When parties did not participate in elections they do not have any moral authority to mingle into student’s so called agitation and full fill their ill desire.
