The Collapse of Assad’s Regime in Syria

The Collapse of Assad’s Regime in Syria

The long-standing regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria came to an unexpected and swift end over the weekend as rebel groups successfully entered Damascus. The surprise offensive, which began just last week, culminated in thousands of people gathering at a main square in the capital to celebrate the fall of Assad’s regime.

In a bold move, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) faction announced that the city was now “free of Assad” and heralded the beginning of a new era for Syria. State TV broadcasts confirmed the rebels’ declaration, announcing “the fall of the tyrant Bashar al-Assad” and the release of regime prisoners. Citizens were urged to safeguard the property of the newly declared “free Syrian state”.

Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, speaking via video message, expressed his readiness to cooperate with any new leadership chosen by the Syrian people. Meanwhile, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani asserted that official institutions in Damascus would remain under the control of the prime minister until a smooth transfer of power could occur.

The sudden downfall of Assad’s regime marks a significant turning point in the ongoing conflict in Syria. The nation now stands on the brink of a new chapter, as the people await the establishment of a new leadership and the beginning of a potentially more stable future.
