Hagoromo chalk has gained a reputation as the “Rolls-Royce” of chalk due to its smooth consistency, vibrant colors, and nearly dust-free quality. Despite the high price tag, loyal fans of the brand rushed to stock up on lifetime supplies when the factory faced closure in 2015. Thankfully, Korean schoolteacher Shin Hyeong-seok stepped in to save the brand by forming a relationship with the company’s president, Watanabe Takayasu, and taking over the production of Hagoromo chalk.
Hyeong-seok’s dedication to maintaining Takayasu’s original formulas and methodology kept the brand alive, but the question remains – will this be enough to ensure its future success? Our visit to Sejongmall, where Hagoromo chalk is produced, gave us insight into the process and the meticulous care that goes into creating these high-quality chalk pieces.
The story of Hagoromo chalk serves as a reminder of the value that consumers place on quality and craftsmanship. Despite the high cost, the brand’s loyal following and reputation for excellence have kept it in demand. As we navigate a world filled with mass-produced goods, the story of Hagoromo chalk serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of products that are made with care and precision.

When you know you know. When you don't you don't. Because to many people don't know or understand what a great product is they fade away. Think about other things that you use. Is 5x really worth buying garbage. If I want to get specialty tools for my trade it's not 5x more now. It's 10x if you can find them used and then they need hours of work so that they will work as much intended. I'm glad that some of the best products are still available.
4:40 "It's a certain liquid ingredient". I think we all know you're getting that from the boi milk farms.
U need to grind it fine, spread it out and then snort
You can trust the Japanese to obsess about regular things and invent expensive versions of them 😀
I am urged to write my name with this chalk ❤It is smooth.
they are such nerds that they have favourite chalks…
2:52 isn’t magnesium carbonate chalk?
Calcium carbonate vs Gypsum
Cannot stand chalk. Smells. Gets all over the place. Then theres the dust. The sound.
Only assholes like chalk.
Ok, i never knew i wanted to learn about chalk…until now. This was fascinating, thank you for making it. I feel like i want to get a box just to try it out and see what it's like.
Do you think it is actually the CHALK QUALITY or do you think it is more likely that the Math Professor is somewhere on the Autism Spectrum with a touch of OCD seeing what will be his only 15 minutes of fame? Just saying, I'm not seeing the math guy interviewed about his math skills, just his preference for insanely expensive chalk.
I'm sort of shocked that schools still use chalkboards instead of switching to whiteboards
This reminded me of the cartoon Chalk zone 😢 damn i hate getting old
People have nothing better to do
The sound of chalk while writing has a magic that inspires what I will write next.
13:16 that' it, I'm buying some (once I make my own money that is)
because it's made in japan, things tends get pretentious there…
I remember watching a video when this company was on the rocks, I'm happy it's still up and running!
I use Hagoromo I buy it through Amazon $44.50 US for 72 pieces. I have no regrets in paying that price. 🙂
There is many benefits of this chalk over other brands.
1:38 I laughed unreasonably hard at that
They must consider to make new brand just to try new manufacturing method focus on worldwide volume production
Hagoromo chalk still use the tested method, become halo product, maintain brand loyalty
The new brand focus on fulfill worldwide demand with comparable quality and value
If new brand successful and steady,
make another brand focus to making it accessable for most
Cuz if they don't fulfill the demand,
I'm afraid some factory in China will distrub the market
they look tasty
Why does it look so tasty tho? 😋
its 40 cents a piece for a stick. that's not really EXPENSIVE if you ask me for a floruescent good quality chalk
Ever hear of whiteboards?
nossa muito caro
Given the history between Japan and Korea, it's genuinely fantastic to see a business from one nation being continued with the same passion in the other.
The secret liquid ingredient is obviously Krusty's Kough Syrup.
I can't stand this background music. It is literally used in so many other videos.
2:22 Why did you cut, when he was clearly about to eat a handful?
I use Hagoromo chalk when I teach algorithms. The chalkboards in some of the buildings on campus are terrible and don't provide friction against the chalk meaning that other chalks don't even write visibly but Hagoromo does. I showed my students a comparison between crayola and other chalks and the Hagoromo and there's really no contest in terms of what writes and erases off of the boards. Apparently I talked too much about it because one of my students gifted me some of the color chalk, I only had a box of white before.
It's nice to see the brand didn't disappear. And now it has a whole new cultural perspective to potentially benefit from! Cool!
2:45 “Hey, we all might be on camera at some point so remember to wear a belt… Okay, I know I said wear a belt, but be sure to tighten it. You don’t want your buttcheeks etched in digital stone.”
5:20 Hawk-Tuah! Write on that thang!
I'm a computer engineer. I have been working with digital products for around a decade. I have not used a chalk in prolly 25 years. I don't know how my feed has a documentary about chalk on it, but damn will I watch it to the end.
Watching that chalk be used is so weirdly satisfying. It looks like it feels so buttery smooth to write with!
Secret liquid ingredient. "hahaha they think its something crazy but we just add water!"
Probably more than I needed to know about chalk.
Clarified milk maybe?
Because its made in Japan, everything in Japan is expensive!
Because japanese always complicate things to claim that its simple products worth more
the sheer PASSION that is felt from producer to user is fire.
Why do keyboards need to be mechanical you asked? This is the reason why.
Add "Japanese" in front of anything. It suddenly becomes expensive.
I'm always very confused by companies that keep a "secret ingredient."
It would be very easy for a competitor to simply take a piece of Hagoromo Chalk and put it under a Mass Spectrometer to determine every single material.
In my country it would be great if we would have regular chalk in each school not Hagoromo, but sure it must be great to write with that
🇳🇴😞
Fidelity is a precious virtue, and not nearly as honored as it should be.
It's much more than 'just making chalk'.
the secret ingredient is c-men.
