Yuzu, a citrus fruit that has been trending in the United States for a few years now, has captured the attention of Michelin-starred chefs, craft breweries, and foodies across the country. Despite being a staple in Japan for centuries and one of the top producers and consumers of yuzu, the strict importation regulations keep yuzu from Japanese producers out of the United States. This leaves fans to rely on the few stateside producers, such as Flavors by Bhumi, to satisfy their cravings for the elusive fruit.
In Japan, like Senkoji Farms, yuzu production is abundant, with the country growing about 27,000 tons of yuzu a year. However, the challenges of growing yuzu in the US, especially on the East Coast, contribute to the high cost of the fruit. Visiting both farms in Japan and the US provides a comparison of the yuzu produced in each location, shedding light on why it is so expensive in the US.
The allure of yuzu’s unique and complex flavor continues to drive its popularity in the US, despite the obstacles that come with importing and growing the fruit in the country. As consumers and chefs alike seek out yuzu for its delicious and versatile qualities, the demand for this rare citrus fruit remains high, contributing to its premium price in the US market.

🤷♂️ what’s a Yuzu ? Probably a reason there’s only a handful of farms in 🇺🇸 ! I betcha there’s only a handful of peanut 🥜 farms in Japan 🇯🇵. Funny how that works 😂

Go to a Korean store, and you can get a large jar of yuja with honey or sugar. Look at the ingredient and check what they use for sweetener. Mix with hot or cold water. Its great.
The usual answer is because it's Japanese.

Is this voice over AI generated, something is odd about it ?
One of my favourite fruit flavours
I'd like to grow yuzu when I buy a smallholding in Scotland.
The more hands that touch it the more expensive it gets and exclusive it raises the price of it even higher
There's over 300 citrus farms in California and there are some pomelo flavors with citrus oil, but no acid that allows much more control over flavoring dishes. Much like many ingredients that originated from China, if it's not local and eaten by common people whom are just trying to add to their own food, it's a scam. Instead of getting grasshopppers for free in Thailand, paying $78 on Amazon and saying it's sustainable is delusional.
Yuzu is very flavorful!
I was in Kochi in Japan last January, drank and eat products made with yuzu , love it 😊
