The Future of Antibiotics: A Talk by Patryk Majewski at TEDxStaffordshireUniversity – Video

The video “Back to the Future for Antibiotics” by Patryk Majewski at TEDxStaffordshireUniversity discusses the pressing issue of antibiotic resistance and the potential solutions to combat this global health crisis. Majewski begins by highlighting the history of antibiotics and the significant impact they have had on modern medicine. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making the current options for treatment less effective.

Majewski then explores the concept of phage therapy, a treatment using bacteriophages to target and kill specific bacteria. He emphasizes the importance of looking back at older, alternative methods of treatment, such as phage therapy, to find new solutions for antibiotic resistance. By reevaluating past practices and integrating them with modern research and technology, Majewski believes that we can create a more sustainable and effective approach to fighting antibiotic resistance.

Overall, “Back to the Future for Antibiotics” encourages us to think outside the box and consider alternative solutions to address the growing threat of antibiotic resistance in order to safeguard the future of medicine.

Author Video Description

Many of us have been prescribed with antibiotics to treat infection. The problem is, bacteria are fighting back.

Advanced Specialist Pharmacist Patryk Majewski talks about the development of antibiotics and the steps we can all take to help fight antimicrobial resistance. Patryk moved from Poland to the UK at the age of 10. After overcoming the challenges of adapting to living in a new country and learning a new language, he decided to pursue his passion for science and graduated with a Masters in Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia.

Once registered as a pharmacist, he moved to Stoke-on-Trent to work as a clinical pharmacist at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM). He developed into an Advanced Specialist Pharmacist in Antimicrobial Stewardship and Critical Care and his role involves working within the infectious disease and ITU wards to support the medical and nursing teams.

He is also part of the antimicrobial stewardship team which aims to support responsible use of antimicrobials across the entire Trust by developing guidelines, teaching sessions, and providing treatment advice.
