The housing crisis in Los Angeles – Between homelessness and luxury real estate | DW Documentary
Los Angeles’ housing crisis is escalating dramatically. Those who can’t find a place to live have to get creative — otherwise, survival becomes a daily struggle.
Even before the devastating fires of January 2025, affordable housing was in short supply in Los Angeles. Even people earning an average full-time salary are at risk of ending up on the streets. In 2024, the number of homeless people in Los Angeles County was well over 75,000. The chronic housing shortage is driving residents to get creative, while also giving rise to new business ideas: Gregory sells camper vans to working people who can’t afford to rent an apartment. He came up with the idea after he himself had to live in a camper van for a while. Car mechanic Roy also lives in a mobile home. The 64-year-old has to supplement his modest pension by working at an auto repair shop.
Since 2012, Elvina, who immigrated to the US, has been renting out beds in large communal dorms for 55 dollars a night. It’s a popular solution, and many long-term residents enjoy the social atmosphere. Elvina now operates seven of these facilities throughout California. Meanwhile Shelton, a real estate agent, is living a picture-perfect American dream. She sells luxury homes and lives with her husband and children in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood. It took more than just hard work to achieve her success: the 42-year-old also had to overcome her alcohol addiction. James has now made it off the streets after living for a time in the notorious Skid Row district in the heart of downtown L.A. He wants to give something back, so once a week he offers free haircuts to those who need them. This documentary looks at varying lifestyles and living conditions in a city where the gap between rich and poor is growing ever wider.

The first "Real-estate Agent" woman makes my blood boil when I saw her… her wealth, her flaunting of it, her excess.
It's pure VANITY and luxury excess over what you actually need.
And her overall attitude while flaunting it makes my blood boil… she's everything that's wrong with rich people. And why I HATE them so much.
While others are struggling, she lives in excess and is so VANE AND SELF INDULGENT about it.
It seems to be happening all over the Western world, normal people can't live as well anymore.
Their are other places u can live very comfortable for 1500 a month all over the US, must u stay in Cali
Even cmnst countries like Scandinavia are tough, even tougher because of the cold, and c0rruptlon.
And dangerous asf, no laws no rules.
It should be illegal for apartments to be this expensive.
Americans deserve it. This is what you get when the government takes its hands off and allows the free market to operate.
Capitalist America. Enjoying the fruits of capitalism.
i have multiple luxurious properties in LA.
in GTA Online.

USA IS A CAPITALIST NOT SOCIALIST SOCIETY, YOU WORK AND MAKE YOUR OWN WAY.
🚩🚩🚩🖐️ first off we don't have a homeless problem!! We have a whole bunch of people who decided to do hard party drugs to have a good time and now they're all addicts by the hundred thousands!! Furthermore we have a left-wing government that completely let us down!! Were the highest taxed city in the country. They don't want to make it easy for people to live here!! That's not the Republicans that's the Democrats. We paid the highest gas prices in the country because they're worth more about the they are the people!! I'm 55 years old I watch this city go from a paradise to a nightmare!! We have overpopulated a city that wasn't designed for any of the amount of people that are here. Furthermore high property values are a natural order of things! Everyone wants to buy a house and then eventually have it worth a whole lot more that's the American dream! These dumb socialists think they want to level the playing field! I'd like to live in Beverly hills I'd like to live in Manhattan! Unfortunately that's out of my means but I'm not going to go demanding lower prices so I can live there!! This city outgrew a lot of the poor people who can't afford it and that's the natural order of things just like Manhattan!! Furthermore we only have so many schools so many police so many fire departments etcetera so much water so much utilities. They seem to want to cram more people into here and expect it to be a miracle.
As a lifelong failed musician, moving to California was not possible, thus I moved to Memphis, with zero possibilities.
10 hours a day, 7 days a week sounds AWFUL. Stressed out all the time. Can't even really enjoy the rich life you've created.
Kathryn and Teresa sound lovely 🙄
The title should be changed to “The gap between drug addicts and non drug addicts’
$1000 a month to live in a chicken coup with no electricity or plumbing in a dudes backyard is rough!
1000 Dollars for a tool shed? 🤡🤦🏻♂️
What those mothers aren’t mentioning is that their employees like house cleaners, nannies and gardeners probably live in those mobile homes. Those folks earn poverty wages and probably can’t afford a car to drive in from the dessert where many live.
All those prices sound somewhat similar, if not lower than in London.
Human trafficking is real in L.A.
I always have this discussion with people that to live in LA you have to do something extraordinary to live here. No one here usually does one thing or has one job unless its full time. You just gotta find something else that pays the bills but also keepingup with the innovation. There's always competition hence why finding a regular job isn't so easy on top of the luxury rent rates their trying to charge nowadays. COMPETITION is a big thing out here in LA theres always gonna be someone or something ahead of doing something better than you can but I guess that's what makes LA LA.

This is an old documentary.
What is the point of comparing wealthy residents to poor residents? Success happens when success is rewarded. It's not an accident that 17 out of the 20 biggest companies in the world are American companies.
Homelessness is obviously an issue. It would be much more useful to analyze and debate supply-side economics, mass transit, educational opportunity and efficiency, or childhood social environment rather than mindlessly villainizing people who were successful in life.
How cruel USA is to its people.
Fully equipped gym 😂😂😂 proceeds to show a treadmill.
That's USA 😊
California is so cooked. The Republicans and Democrats that run that place are all crooked and out of touch with reality. It's crazy sad.
The question, It is whose economic problems politicians choose to prioritize.😢
US is a mess. The country is beyond repair.

What are democrats doing for the past 10 years in California? Who are they going to blame this time?
Since 2019, 24 billion was spent on the homeless in California. Where did the money go? Now, the state is under investigation because of fraud.
only rich people can be so stupid to wear a gold necklace with their own name LOL🤣🤣🤣
This documentary is a few years old. Seriously, DW?
So not poverty?
People don’t see the problem, if you can’t afford it, don’t live there. Living in LA, you are paying for city and environment, if you just move out of the city to the small towns, the rent is half of LA.
Same everywhere
Canada has had a housing crisis for 30 years. Why call it a crisis? 30 years and it has only got much worse. Nothing is being done.
You guys don’t understand that since it’s a multi billion dollar industry, LA government is not interested in fixing the problem. California is an epicenter of corruption.
Wait a minute, are you saying that the US is not great?
Ever since Trump came to power US is greater than great. US has no problems obviously
