“Write To Save Your Life” is not only the title to this TEDX talk but a a call to action. Writing to save your life, can be the beginning of a journey that anyone can join. In this TedX talk writer Rick Najera is calling you to begin a lifelong journey with writing. He asks you to call yourself a writer and shows you why.
He asks you to get rid of self doubt and perfectionism and just write. This is the starting point of your journey to your authentic story and purpose . In this talk the speaker recounts how writing saved his life and his personal story became a universal story to save and inspire others to write. From his earliest start with crushing dyslexia and ADHD to a disastrous academic start and after being flunked in school. Najera went on to write on some of the biggest groundbreaking shows in Hollywood . The speaker recounts how storytelling as first seen in cave paintings over 28,000 years ago is the earliest attempt at storytelling and the author believes storytelling is the most primordial need and oldest need that humankind has experienced.
Storytelling is a unique human experience that unites us all. There are no new emotions created in our lifetime. Lust, fear, terror, anger,want, joy and triumph . Humanity has not changed emotionally, only the delivery of our stories have changed. We all have been compelled to tell a story. We have gone from cave paintings to the vastness of satellites and space and the world wide web but stories have remained the same. From starring in films with Sidney Poitier, George Clooney and most recently Mario Lopez, to writing sketch comedy for Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx, Najera is best known for starring on Broadway in his award-winning, self-penned stageplay, Latinologues, directed by comedy legend Cheech Marin. Najera is only one of three Latinos to ever write and star in their own play on Broadway.
