Bali, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, has long been a popular destination for tourists seeking paradise. However, the dark side of overtourism has left a devastating impact on the island’s natural beauty.
In a recent report by FRANCE 24, it was revealed that over 5 million tourists visited Bali in 2023, leaving behind a staggering 300,000 tons of plastic waste each year. The beautiful beaches that once attracted visitors from around the globe are now marred by heaps of plastic debris washing up on the shore.
The issue of plastic pollution in Bali is not only a threat to the environment, but also to the local communities who depend on tourism for their livelihoods. The sheer volume of plastic waste is overwhelming, posing a serious challenge for waste management and conservation efforts on the island.
As the world grapples with the urgent need to address plastic pollution, Bali serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked tourism. The allure of paradise comes at a cost, and it is up to both tourists and local authorities to take action to preserve the beauty of this once pristine island.

This is not just Bali, to be honest.
The same is happening in other Indonesian cities, and even in its Southeast Asian neighbors. In Indonesia's case, the lack of proper waste management or processing system is the main issue. Locals already having ordeals handling it (including changing the habitual mindset of using plastic). And it gets worse with tourists adding their own trash when they visit.
It is easy to put the blame on the tourists…
They should limit the number of tourists coming in
What a shame that guests cannot be civilized. 😞
Not only bali is choking on PVC polymers
So locals don't use plastic? Just take some of the profit from tourism and clean it up. There I solved it for them.
No biggie. We’re just passing through.
In a few short years the impending abrupt & irreversible climate change leading to the 6th Mass Extinction would proly be over. Planet be taking millions of years to recover. We humans are the asteroid that impacted Earth. Great day in NYC though☮️💜
This ugly reality is contributed to by the residents as well. I was there and saw it. There is no garbage collection system and no recycling service or option. It’s not just in the tourist areas. They burn their garbage, including plastic.
