Seth Cheetham, a molecular biologist and cancer researcher, discusses the exciting potential of personalized mRNA vaccines in revolutionizing cancer treatment in his TEDxUQ talk. Cheetham explains how traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy have limitations and can cause harmful side effects, highlighting the need for more targeted and effective treatments.
He introduces the concept of mRNA vaccines, which can be personalized to target specific cancer cells based on an individual’s genetic makeup. Cheetham emphasizes the potential of mRNA vaccines to stimulate the immune system to specifically attack cancerous cells while sparing healthy cells, thus minimizing side effects.
Cheetham also discusses the challenges and future possibilities of personalized mRNA vaccines, including the need for further research and development. Overall, his talk sheds light on the promising role that personalized mRNA vaccines could play in improving cancer treatment and outcomes for patients.

What if cancer treatments could be designed as unique as your fingerprint? Learn about the science behind these vaccines and find out how scientists can pinpoint the unique mutations within a patient’s cancer cells, that can be used to create a vaccine tailored to that individual’s condition. Seth Cheetham is the leader of the Australian mRNA Cancer Vaccine centre and Deputy Director of the BASE mRNA manufacture facility. Seth has played an instrumental role in building the BASE Facility into Australia’s leading mRNA research and manufacture hub. He recently received programmatic funding from the Australian Medical Research Future fund to establish Australia’s first personalised cancer vaccine centre. His research program aims to progress new types of mRNA therapeutics for cancer into the clinic.
