The Snorkel (1958)
Director: Guy Green
Cast:
- Peter van Eyck as Paul
- Betta St. John as Candy
- Mandy Miller as young Candy
In the taut British thriller The Snorkel, directed by Guy Green, we meet a teenage girl named Candy who becomes embroiled in a murky web of deceit and murder. Rife with tension, the film begins with the tragic death of Candy’s mother under suspicious circumstances. Convinced that her stepfather, Paul, is the murderer, Candy is determined to uncover the truth.
Paul is a master manipulator, having created the perfect alibi that places him miles away from the scene of the crime. As the plot unfolds, viewers watch as Candy navigates a world where every adult around her dismisses her concerns, making her plight all the more desperate. With every passing moment, the stakes escalate, and Candy finds herself not only fighting to prove her stepfather’s guilt but also to save her own life from a man who is willing to eliminate any threats to his carefully crafted façade.
The Snorkel is not just a narrative about a girl seeking justice; it’s a psychological game of cat and mouse, where innocence clashes with malevolence, creating a gripping atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll. This film showcases impressive performances by its lead actors, particularly the chilling portrayal of Paul by Peter van Eyck and the poignant resolve of Mandy Miller as Candy.
This cinematic gem from 1958 remains a captivating exploration of trust, manipulation, and the struggle for truth amidst a chilling backdrop of suspicion and danger.

Dude literally gaslit his victims! 🤯
I rather enjoyed the plot and character development! The young protagonist and her dog were smarter than all the adults 😂
One of my favorite
Great movie!!! Acting is superb. Villian is beyond despicable….charming as a cobra.
OMG! I saw this as a child, and, at the end, I said to my big sister "what if no-one comes?". She said, "of course they will, the police are coming". I said "what if they don't?". She told me that they would, but I spent literally YEARS thinking about the end of this film! It's excellent, as is Mandy Miller. (from Australia)
How infuriating when young people are dismissed as liars! Especially teenage girls are branded as jealous, hysterical, even mentally ill.
😂 I love these old flicks I don’t know if it’s British culture or what. Not a shock or staggered tears prolonged for a dead mum. Well it’s the movies.😂
Excellent film! I wonder where in Italy this is.
🎬 has a satisfactory end. Takes a lot to unravel.
What a terrific movie!!!! My favorite murder mysteries are all black and white British films. Thank you, Stream City!!!😊😊😊😊😊
