33:25 the Roman Empire actually started with Octavian (ruled from 27 BC to 14 AD). When Rome invaded these areas, it still was the Roman Republic.
yes you observation is correct, same human biology changing names, true time, similar to the United States of America , Aztecs and Mayans now are United States Mexicanos , United States of America, Salvadorans , ECT, or the Hellenic people are all of us from Ancient Rome to toda Latinos from Latina Latium Peninsula Italica . great cinematography
👍
Lemnos looks amazing !
biology has nothing to do with ethnicity blood is biology no conditioning ( ethnicity ) , you are one great example, you biology began and continuo to move over the earth changing ethic markers or human conditioning reflexes , 10000 years ago you probably walk the same geography you are walking today and identify as X , but now you identify you self American, an erroneous terminology, today you passport say United States of America 10000 thousand year ago if existe a passport will say something out . saludos great observation
yes the Egyptians of today are directly descended from the kingdom of Egypt , the Egyptians ,the Arabs all are the same Hellenic people, the historians call this time, the Ptolemaic Kingdom , replaced by another created Hellenic empire we call the Romans, the Arabs become influent around the year 630 or close to that time. We are the human race only one race, changing gang membership and accepting a new condition reflex in every new generation . saludos
I think you're completely wrong about modern Egyptians not being related to ancient Egyptians. The arab genetic part is only like 15-20% and most is still north African

It's interesting to visit and understand significant historical sites. But, spending time at an abandoned modern hotel is not interesting to me.
What an adventure, island hopping .
Thank You Gabriel Another Awesome Adventure Safe Travels🙂❤👍
Aliki salt lake is known to have the largest seasonal gathering (in spring) of Greater Flamingo in Greece.
Thank you Gabriel this vid was great you visit the main attractions of the Island! What's up next?
Such a shame to realise that in antiquity these islands could support ancient cities but nowadays look like an ecological disaster zone. Partially of course due to climate change but also by human intervention like deforestation and misuse of land which caused erosion and the slow dissapearance of fertile soil and natural water sources. The same happened on the Canary Islands, which just like many Greek islands have a very fragile ecosystem, but there the Spanish government is experimenting with replanting the original Canarian Pines that can even survive some volcanic eruptions. They idea is that in the dry season the vegetation can collect watervapour out of the air so that the system becomes sustainable again. You can even get a jail sentence for cutting one down!

How are you finding Thassos so far ?
33:05 The Roman Empire did begin with Julius Caesar, or Augustus to be precise, his heir and succesor and officially the first emperor. So thats why people say that. Before that Roman civilization did exist of course, but as a republic, not an empire. It was ruled with two consuls on the top of the hierarchy who were elected by the senator class each year, like the consul mentioned in the bit of information at that site. The Roman Republic started when the last of seven kings of Rome, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, was overtrown in 509 BC. The kings were of Etruscan decent, a civilization on the Italian peninsula that predates Roman culture.
This republican system was specifically designed to prevent Rome from ever becoming a kingdom or empire again. The one year was too short for any consul to gather enough strenght to grab power and there were always two of them to balance things out. Of course this system ultimately failed and in a desperate attempt Caesar was assassinated on the ides of march to restore the republican system. But by then it was already too late. Earlier restructuring of the Roman army to a professional legion based system, the Marian Reforms, ment that whoever controlled these legions, ultimately controlled Rome. This is of course what Caesar realized when he was asked by the senate to surrender his command. He of course famously denied that order with the phrase "the die is cast", crossed the river Rubicon and marched on Rome itself and thereby effectively ended the republican era.

As far as we know the first Greeks were the Mycinians mainly because the inscriptions found in Mycinian palaces were written in the early form of greek language. This means that greek history dates back three an a half thousand years! There is a gap in greek history which has to do with the collapse of civilizations of the estern Mediterranean in the twelveth century BC. After the dark ages that ended in the eight hundreds began the archaic period followed by the classical after the 500 BC. The Hellenistic period begins after Alexander's death in 323 ending with the begining of the Roman in 31BC, when Augustus became the firts emperor….
almost look like a moonlanding site!

I'll answer some of the history questions 😊
Historical periods:
There's the Bronze Age: the Cycladic cultures (did not speak Greek), Minoan Civilization in Crete and Santorini (did not speak Greek), and Mycenaean Civilization (*did* speak Greek) in southern peninsular Greece. Then there was the Bronze Age Collapse, roughly 1200 BC, followed by the "Greek Dark Ages" (in art historic: Protogeometric and Geometric periods, because all art from this mystery period is vases with geometric patterns).
Then the Archaic Period starts, roughly 800 BC. In the Archaic Period, we see the emergence of a recognizable Greek culture (religion, literature, art, architecture). It wasn't "primitive", it's when the now-known Greek literature, philosophy, etc, all started. Homer wrote in the 8th century (collecting older myths that predate the Archaic period), the philosophy started in the later part of the Archaic Period.
Around 500 BC, we see the beginning of the Classical Period. In the Classical Period, the architecture becomes "more sophisticated"; this is the era that people stereotype as "Ancient Greece". The art (sculptures, but also lost paintings) also becomes more photographic/natural-looking, more anatomically correct. Classical sculpture breaks away from stiff figures of the Archaic period, and bring more emotion, movement, figures standing in more natural-looking positions, etc. This was also the time of a lot of intellectual innovation (i.e. Plato, Socrates), but maybe is a little inaccurate to think of it as a "peak", as Greek culture produced plenty culture content before and after that (i.e. Athens flourished in the Roman period), but yeah, this is the time period people stereotype as "peak".
Then in 323 BC starts the Hellenistic Period. This period is marked by the Kingdom of Macedonia invading the other Greek city-states. It lasts throughout Macedonian rule over a unified Greece, and then includes Greece's annexation in the Roman Republic (146 BC). The Hellenstic period ends in 32 BC, around the time Octavian (aka Augustus) overthrows the Roman Republic and declares himself emperor. "Hellenistic" means "like the Greeks", and the period is called this, because Greek culture had a major impact on both 1) areas Alexander conquered to the east and 2) a heavy influence on Italy as well. In art history, this area is characterized by art and architecture becoming much more flamboyant.
Then is the Roman Imperial period. Greece flourishes as part of the Roman Empire, and we see the emergence of a common Greco-Roman culture. The Roman impact on Greece is strong to this day.
In the 3rd century AD, there's the 3rd century crisis, when the Roman Empire is hammered by barbarian tribes. In the 4th century, Christianity is the majority religion. Then we go into the Middle Ages, and the East Roman Empire continued for another thousand years. But there's also the Latin States period, especially ~300 years in Southern Greece (Peloponnese, Rumely, Cyclades, Dodecanese) where French and Spanish royal families divided Greece into small duchies. Then Ottoman/Venetian rule.
With regard to the settlement in Lemnos: it's like the difference between New York City and Syracuse. There were major important cities, like Athens, Corinth, etc. And there were more "provincial" ones. And, of course, different areas come and go in importance throughout Greek history. For example, Crete had the Minoan Civilization, but is pretty quiet in "Ancient" times (Archaic-Classical-Hellenistic-Roman) and Medieval times, and then becomes prominent in Greek cultural history again during the Renaissance under Venetian rule.
