Thousands of UK farmers took to the streets in protest against the proposed changes to inheritance tax laws that will significantly impact their businesses. From April 2026, inherited agricultural assets in the UK worth more than £1m, which were previously exempt, will now be liable to inheritance tax.
The new legislation has sparked outrage among the farming community, who argue that the changes will put their livelihoods at risk and could force many family-owned farms out of business. Farmers fear that they will have to sell off land and assets in order to pay the hefty tax bill, leading to the consolidation of farms and the loss of traditional agricultural practices.
The protest, organized by various farming associations and unions, saw farmers from all over the UK coming together to show their opposition to the inheritance tax changes. Many held banners and signs calling for fair treatment for farmers and demanding that the government reconsider the new legislation.
The government, however, has defended the changes, stating that they are necessary to ensure a fair and sustainable tax system. They argue that wealthy individuals should not be able to avoid paying inheritance tax on valuable assets like land, while others are required to pay tax on their inherited wealth.
As the debate continues, farmers remain united in their fight against the inheritance tax changes, calling for a solution that will protect their way of life and support the future of British agriculture.

No doubt, Starmer and his Labour party will come up with reasons to jail these hardworking and patriotic farmers. You get what you vote for.
No farmers no food
These Brexit-supporting farmers brought this upon themselves. Shame on the Tories and Reform for being so opportunistic. Everyone knows that, should Badenoch or Farage get their way, the UK's farming sector would be obliterated. Those Australian and New Zealand trade deals were just the beginning, just wait until Trump demands that we take all of America's surplus hormone-fed beef and chlorinated chicken carcasses.
Government purposely Engineering food scarcity….. do any bbc watchers even comprehend what I just said??? Comment below.x
Ok. No inheritance tax increase for everyone. It is one way or the other. If it has to be increased, there should be no exemption, or not doing it at all. Everyone has their own reasons for their own gains.
We support the farmers and we can’t stand you or Starmer BBC!
Starmer the ANTI Farmer
The government needs the money 💰 to send to the war zone for Ukraine 🇺🇦. Not for school & NHS. They are lies
If they want to bring this in it needs to be blanket if you own a business 20 percent if you own anything 20 percent before you're kids can have it
Surprised you didn’t ban the comments this time
BBC loving class war. Why are you lemons still paying the tv licence fee. If you just watch netflix or youtube you don't need to pay for the TV licence. Cancel your tv licence today. Defund the bbc.
Surely a boycott is more powerful than protests.
All inheritance tax on every citizen needs to be abolished. If the UK government needs the money it should take it from all the corrupt politicians from third world countries it has allowed into the country.
Labour the cowardly government, lights the touch paper and runs. I hate them and I was a fool that voted them in.
When did a socialist government ever help the people 🤔
Never seen a poor farmer. We're in this together.
Just watched the BBC news at 10… interesting to see how they subtlety rubbished the farmers… they are just Labour’s mouthpiece.
Elon Musk makes a good point.. "a tax on tea started the American Revolution"
don't bite the hand that feeds you
The changes in the tax law do not effect 73% of farms. And that upper 27% includes rather a lot of tax dodgers, the likes of Jeremy Clarkson among them, who bought up huge amounts of farmland for the sole purpose of the inheritance tax benefits.
As someone who lives rurally and used to help out on my family's small holding as a kid but had to give up on our pigs and chickens for monetary reasons, this is a genuinely ridiculous thing to protest.
Shame on Victoria Derbyshire on her ridiculous interview with Jeremy Clarkson saying that farmers need to help the government fill the £22 billion black hole in public finances. The government shouid stop paying for illegals and propping up foreign wars, then they would fill it!
30 thousand. Be accurate.
The problem is not inheritance tax – which does only impact a very small proportion of all farms – it is low prices for produce and loss of subsidies after Brexit. As most farmers voted for Brexit and thus ruined ours and their incomes and markets then perhaps this is chickens coming home to roost!!!
TV tax is shameful (to pay these filthee liars at the bbc huge salaries)
Clarkson is amazing ❤
What inheritance tax should be imposed on the royal family? I mean, they don't feed the nation, right? 😉
Remove triple lock pensions, remove subsidies and let capitalism flourish.
No person should be born wealthy.
This administration has no idea how much people are suffering, things are getting so much harder that we can't take it anymore. Many people struggle financially to put food on the table and a roof over their heads. I appreciate your advice, Veronica. Imagine I invested $2,000 and got $10,600
Starmageddon
Voted in by the rich elite. Working class fitting the bill
Apart from bringing in refugees, the Labor Party only knows how to raise taxes without economic planning, scare businessmen away, increase the minimum wage, and then close businesses.
Support Famers!!!
Bill gates met steimer 1 week before the 20% tax ,they want us to starve .
These are the people who voted for BREXIT.
Why not stop blind trusts?
Explain that bbc?
Can they grow ULEZ cameras? If not, the Government isn't interested. Sorry chaps.
Victoria Derbyshire and Jeremy Clarkson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQGVJ_5CsyM
Vote Labour they said . Mistake
Inheritance tax is pure theft.
Sell your farms in UK and invest in Romania, there's no inheritance tax at all
Defund the bbc and use that money instead of squeezing it out of farmers.
BBC supports this as it will be a source of their future capital needs to vomit government propaganda on a hourly basis.
Just put your property into a trust not a will
What’s this new fashion of completely removing the term “British”? UK is not an adjective. “British” is. “UK” is not a citizenship – “British” is. And yes, that includes Northern Ireland because it is under the “British Crown”.
Scum bag starmer. Hes trying to break it all down.
