Tibet, the Dalai Lama and the power struggle with China | DW Documentary
The 14th Dalai Lama is 89 years old. The question of who will succeed him has sparked a power struggle between India and China. Beijing wants to be solely in charge of choosing the next Tibetan spiritual leader. In its eyes, Tibet belongs to China.
The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since 1959. The older he gets, the more important the question of his succession becomes — not only for the future of Tibet, but also for global geopolitics. India, the United States and the European Union support Tibet, which has demanded autonomy since its annexation by China in 1950. China, meanwhile, does not recognize the Dalai Lama’s government in exile.
Beijing is now determined to take sole responsibility for appointing the next Dalai Lama, raising fears that the debate could have serious political consequences. Tensions between China and India have been exacerbated by a conflict over a disputed border, which has been smoldering since 1962. When Mao Tse-tung’s People’s Liberation Army invaded Tibet, India lost the Buddhist neighbor that lay between it and Communist China. With the Tibetan people forced to assimilate, India granted asylum to the 14th Dalai Lama and numerous other refugees, much to Mao Tse-tung’s displeasure. Since then, conflict has simmered, especially in the disputed Himalayan border region.
By taking power in Tibet, China was also able to secure valuable mineral resources such as chromium, copper, borax, uranium and lithium. It also gained control over the sources of Asia’s largest rivers — something India sees as a threat to its supplies of fresh water.
Tibetans themselves are caught in a standoff between the two most populous nations in the world, which are also major economic powers. It is not easy for them to make their voices heard, despite the best efforts of their spiritual leader.

The most western populations have no clue what kind of lives the old Tibetans lived through……yes, it was a religious area but if there was anything but freedom! The majority people there were slaves both physically and spiritually before 1951. They had nothing…….but serve their masters and the religious leaders like Dalai Lama……who lived luxurious and corrupted life styles…….😢
Not only to be Chinese but to be Han Chinese.
Thank you DW Documentary channel 🙏🙏🙏
China is the source of all conflicts we see today.
I love religions.
From my understanding, the younger generation does not care about their ancestors' dreams or hopes very much. They have their own lives and interests that they need to struggle with.
They are definitely getting a share of 1.6B😂😂😂😂
DW : Human rights are selective only for the Western people and for the people who are against the west adversaries
You have shown the wrong map of India. Disgraceful channel.
The biggest abstacle for Dalailama's return to Lasha is Modi but not Xi . Dalailama is a tool for indian in Anti-China policy
DW is a subsidiary Media for the Americans.
This is not a problem for anyone to SAY you said I said !
Based on history Tibet "was" part of China for almost 1000years even according to British.
Based on religion and this is the India comes in for the last 70 years or so. Before East Indian Company claimed the India was not even a country. It was just a piece and pieces of continents.
One can do some research about the China's dynasties. And the original owner of the land and water it claims today.😮
The education system in exile tibet without Mandarin mean the exile group would never back Tibet
Henry Kissinger died with a life stained with blood of Tibetans and Uighurs.
Lots of Corona Virus spotted in the comments section.
I just watched the documentary on Chongqing, let see how this pans out

The fact is that Zhao erfeng was the man who take back all Tibet before Mao.
Zhao erfeng and its Qing.soldiers were more important than Mao and PLA in the control of Tibet
Make a detailed documentray about the native Amercans/ red indianz. Why they arent in the majority in their own land and where are they now.

1:00:09 This appears to be Lech Walesa, not Havel xD
There are hundreds of youtubers who travelled to Xizang and made vlogs, its easy to look up what its really like.
My adult children were born in US. I could hardly get them interested in any China and Taiwan politics, nor Tiebet. He may go to Xinjiang in the future and that's the only influence from our watching YouTube, and probably propaganda from the western media too😎. Their friends of similar background are the same. My son took a one year sabbatical and went to Asia. He has been through Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Taiwan. He is back in US for his cousin's wedding and will head South to Australia soon.
2:34 "for the first time in history we had Chinese troops on our border, we never had them before". This smart-looking guy has a terrible sense of history: Tibet has been under Chinese control (or invaded by China) since the Qing Dynasty, and the Qing Government has stationed troops in Tibet since 1731 when India was still ruled by the Mughal Empire.
Well, if you don't consider the Manchu-led Qing as China, then Turkic-Mongol-led Mughal and British Raj should also not be India – then you're correct that Chinese (meaning communist China) troops border with India (meaning the Republic of India) for the first time in the 1950s.
Tibet is a spiritual place.. & Chinese are atheist… So TIBET SHOULD BE AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY
America, Britain, France etc did they same thing when they invaded other countries. Repressed the rights of the people, forced labor, murdered the people, took children from their parents and reeducation them. So what is the difference between them and the People Republic of China. This is a one sided narrative with America and Europe oppression in the continent of Africa. Which they still do and support to this day.
fre tibet
Imagine if American Indians demanded that the entire current U.S. territory be restored as Indian Country. Do you think that could be done?
Tenzen giatsu is a CIA agent.
Great documentary!
I wanted to say something about it but anytime I try to post it my Huawei starts bleeping and overheating. What should I think guys?😅
You have to ask yourself why the Tibetans living in China today are living better lives than those that fled to India. As for the "free Tibet" crowd, dont live on colonised lands and talk about freeing others when you wont even give up stolen lands and return it to the natives.
Chinabots getting nuts in the comments 😂
After many days DW documentary made an interesting , geopolitical and an extraordinary documentary.
Very thank you DW documentary .
Why do people miss theocracy ?
美国的16亿美元反华资金开始发挥作用了😂
1 min in and it already lied
Without Tibet land china is much more smaller than the United States in term of km2.
Communism is not here to help anyone. It’s to feed people a lot of ideological nonsense and provide them with long labor days so that the party members can keep their cozy jobs and enrich their families.
Slavery will remain abolished.
So if the Dalai Lama doesn't bend the knee, he won't be allowed back to Tibet and be reincarnated as another Dalai Lama…. and may come back as a cricket?
It is not a power struggle; it is a "struggle for the Chinese Constitution and justice according to the law." Please frame it correctly.
Free Tibet ✊🏻
