Tornado Watch Issued for New York City, Long Island, and Tri-State Area as Severe Storms Bring 60 MPH Winds and Flash Flooding

A Tornado Watch covering New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, southern Connecticut and northeast Pennsylvania is in effect until 9 PM EDT Tuesday, with a confirmed severe thunderstorm already producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail in the Hudson Valley and a Flood Warning issued for a Bergen County, New Jersey river expected to crest above flood stage tonight.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Dutchess County Faces 60 MPH Winds and a Possible Tornado

The NWS Albany office has a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect until 4:30 PM EDT for central Dutchess County, New York. At 4:01 PM, a severe thunderstorm was located over Millbrook, about 11 miles northeast of Poughkeepsie, moving east at 25 mph. Radar indicated 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, with forecasters warning of hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding and trees.

Communities in the path include Pleasant Valley, Millbrook, Stanfordville, Staatsburg, Dover Plains, Milan, Salt Point, Verbank and Bangall. The NWS flagged a possible tornado embedded in the storm, along with continuous cloud-to-ground lightning and torrential rain capable of producing flash flooding.

Tornado Watch 507: NYC, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut Under Watch Until 9 PM

Tornado Watch 507 stretches across an unusually wide swath of the Northeast until 9 PM EDT. In the NWS New York office area, the watch covers all five New York City boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island), Long Island’s Nassau County and parts of Suffolk, plus Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties in the Hudson Valley, northeast New Jersey counties including Bergen, Essex, Union, Hudson and Passaic, and parts of southern Connecticut. New York Harbor and western Long Island Sound are also included.

Farther north, the NWS Binghamton office placed central New York counties — including Broome, Chenango, Otsego, Delaware and Sullivan — and northeast Pennsylvania counties including Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne and Pike under the same watch, warning that several rounds of thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, hail, heavy rainfall and tornadoes through the evening.
