How Flight Attendants Are Trained for Fires, Disasters, and Chaos
In the wake of recent high-profile aviation incidents and technical malfunctions, flight anxiety has surged among passengers. A revealing poll commissioned by The Points Guy indicates that nearly 90% of respondents harbor fears about flying, creating a new layer of complexity for flight attendants. Beyond their traditional role of serving meals and drinks, these professionals are now front-line defenders against a spectrum of potential crises—from passenger misconduct to catastrophic situations like crash landings.
This Business Insider video takes viewers inside the rigorous training programs of cabin crew at major airlines such as Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. The training is designed not just to prepare flight attendants for routine responsibilities, but to equip them with essential skills for managing emergencies. A thorough understanding of firefighting techniques, evacuation protocols, and first aid practices ensures they can act decisively when chaos strikes.
The video delves deep into the history and evolution of the flight attendant role. Once primarily seen as customer service personnel, today’s flight attendants are trained to prioritize passenger safety above all else. This shift reflects a growing recognition of the challenges flight crews face in a climate of heightened anxiety and occasional unruly behavior from passengers.
One of the most critical components of their training is firefighting. Flight attendants learn how to combat onboard fires quickly and efficiently, using equipment provided by airlines. This training can mean the difference between life and death, reinforcing the importance of their role in maintaining passenger safety.
Emergency exit procedures take center stage as well. Attendants practice opening exit doors under various conditions, including during simulated emergencies. The training emphasizes rapid response and familiarity with procedures to ensure swift evacuations. Slide evacuations are another vital aspect, equipping crew members with the skills to guide passengers safely off the aircraft in case of an emergency landing.
The use of motion simulators adds a modern twist to the training process, allowing flight attendants to experience various in-flight scenarios safely. Coupled with water evacuation drills, the training prepares them for worst-case scenarios that could arise over oceans or in emergencies.
However, a significant challenge persists: the growing anxiety among passengers. As more individuals take to the skies—projected to hit record numbers by 2025—flight attendants will face an increasing burden of responsibility. The video explores whether these dedicated professionals can maintain safety while navigating the rising tide of nervous flyers.
The extensive training ensures flight attendants are not only well-prepared for emergencies but also capable of providing the necessary comfort and reassurance to apprehensive passengers. As flying remains an integral part of modern life, the commitment to keeping skies safe lies heavily on their capable shoulders.
This nuanced exploration reveals that flight attendants are truly more than just a friendly face in the cabin; they are trained experts ready to tackle fires, disasters, and the chaos of air travel. In an era of increasing passenger volume and anxiety, their role is more vital than ever.

Demographics is destiny. Especially for complex systems. Import them and you will become them.
Ah yes, global warming .a dealdy virus and plane explosive training
What an interesting topic. This video made me think. Thanks for such captivating content.

Thank you for your hard work and talent.
👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 ; 🚘
I trust a propeller plane rather than a jet
You have such a wonderful presentation style. I always look forward to your new videos, and it has become a real motivation for me.

They are just waitresses in the sky
As a flight attendant…I appreciate this video so much! People need to know how much training we do to be able to fly. How many hours we work. How irregular our hours are. How we are paid. How much we love our job not only because of the benefits, but because we genuinely love meeting new people. It’s one of the main reasons I don’t wanna be a pilot. I would be so bored in the flight deck. 😂
Also, that Russian flight always makes me cry. Those people sliding with their bags and walking off the plane like it’s no big deal while there are over 40 people burning alive behind them. It makes me absolutely sick!
Gracias!
same training is required for passengers. every airline needs to call flyers to train passengers how to evacuate
Insightful!! 🟢 Hello from Bucharest, Romania – a huge underrated city in Europe.
During any crisis wouldn't that be foolish to be remaining competitive concerning who can be focusing on what they are doing best? Like when feeling competitive enough to be going out of their way to be false accusing someone of having left behind a walker instead of asking them were they put it after thye had offered to help push their cart in a crowded elevator which at the time was about to be forbidden to be used after that. Or whatever while constant feeling like they always have to look like the biggest looking like they have it all together hero in their role around in order to hold down a paid job. Sometimes already homeless people struggling with diseases can surprise us duiring a major crisis like when a war front begins and then goes on and on.
Good to know about their training. Also, huge cultural differences between Qatar, Singapore and Delta flight attendants, the food and training

Pls Mark one about pilot tranning
Downvoted. What a bunch of nonsense. *Commerical* flights are so incredibly safe nowadays that deaths are insanely rare. Flight attendants have a near-zero impact on survival rate; it is the engineering and pilot training that have the super-majority of the impact. Flight attendants *ARE* effectively waitresses. It is like saying that teachers are doctors, because you stock a defil in schools.
Super interesting! I find it odd that people hav problems with attendants. I’ve never so much as had an attitude with one.
Reassuring to see the level of training required to be a flight attendant with so much going on in the world great video and reporting!
My life is so worthless that my carry on luggage is worth more!
My mom flew for Pan Am for over 30 years until it stopped operating in 91. Hearing her stories are such a stark contrast to flying today. This was very interesting to me
Watching this just made me realize… flight attendants aren’t there to serve snacks. They’re there to save lives. Totally changed my perspective.
Worst job on the planet,, and the American fight attendants are fat slobs that have no fashion sense,, international crews look a hell of a lot more fashionable
The issue with service in general (air crews, hotel teams, even your fastfod chain down the street) is that people's behaviours have gone UN-CHECKED! People don't think, they KNOW that they can get away with assaulting service members with little to zero repercussions.
Yes, travelling can be a doozy, the delays, the missed flights due to circumstances beyond your control, so many factors that affects your mood. However, attacking the crew members isn't going to make the flight go faster, it isn't going to un-cancel the flight.
Just like you, individuals in service are people too. They're not robots. You'd be surprised at just how far a better attitude can take you with people in service. Also, industry higher-ups, allow people to be checked when necessary with the fear of losing ones job for standing up for themselves or their team.
Fantastic video. So relevant. Having flown tons of miles, it is great to get insight on all the amazing training and work these heroes of the air go through to keep us safe. And to get confirmation that air travel is still very safe. The historical context is brilliant. Thank you!
By praying? Ain't no way you gonna survive this anyways.
I'm a gas station attendant. I used to work night shift full time. I've seen my nonsense but I wish people would understand what we have to deal with at times. They just assume we watch movies all night and do nothing.
We also don't keep large amounts of cash in our registers. Please pay in the smallest bills possible or pay in cards.
They have to make it political with garbage comments and false information
