Trudeau: India “refused to cooperate” in diplomatic dispute, both countries expel 6 diplomats each

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken a firm stance against India, announcing the expulsion of six Indian diplomats from Canada due to New Delhi’s refusal to cooperate in criminal investigations. This decision came shortly after India expelled six Canadian diplomats, marking a new chapter in the escalating dispute over the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

Trudeau emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The evidence brought to light by the RCMP cannot be ignored…it is necessary to disrupt the criminal activities that continue to pose a threat to public safety in Canada.” The Prime Minister expressed understanding for the concerns of Canadians, especially those in the Indo-Canadian and Sikh communities, who are feeling angry, upset, and frightened by the events unfolding.

Canada is urging India to cooperate with RCMP probes into violent incidents and coercive behavior linked to agents of the Indian government. Trudeau criticized the Indian government for supporting “criminal activity against Canadians” on Canadian soil, labeling it as a “fundamental error.” The Prime Minister’s firm stance underscores the seriousness of the situation and the importance of maintaining public safety in Canada.
