Trump’s scathing attack on journalist who revealed huge security breach

President Trump has come out swinging against journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic magazine, following a major security breach in which Goldberg was inadvertently added to a group chat discussing top-secret war plans. The chat, which included top US national security officials and the Vice-President, revealed classified details of an impending military assault on Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Goldberg’s access to the chat through an insecure messaging app allowed him to read messages between Vice-President JD Vance and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, among others, detailing weapons packages, targets, and timings of the US strikes before they happened. The blunder was described by senior Democrats as one of the most stunning military breaches in recent times, leading to Congressional scrutiny of those involved.

Despite the serious nature of the security breach, the White House sought to downplay its significance, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that President Trump maintained confidence in his national security team. The successful outcome of the attacks on the Houthis was emphasized in an attempt to shift focus from the breach itself.

The sequence of events leading to the breach involved an accidental connection request from White House National Security Adviser Michael Waltz to Goldberg on the encrypted messaging app Signal. Goldberg was then added to a chat group titled “Houthi PC small group,” which included accounts impersonating high-ranking officials such as the Vice-President, Defence Secretary, and Director of the CIA.

The breach, which occurred just days before the US conducted air strikes on the Houthis, raised serious concerns about the security protocols in place within the administration. Despite the attempts to deflect attention from the breach, the incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance and accountability in handling classified information.

As the repercussions of the security breach continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how the administration will address the implications of such a significant lapse in security protocols. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding classified information and the potential consequences of failing to do so.
