Ukraine accuses Russia of ‘psychological’ warfare after nations close embassies

Ukraine has accused Russia of engaging in ‘psychological’ warfare after the two nations made the decision to close their embassies. This comes amidst escalating tensions between the two countries, with Ukraine receiving support from the US in the form of American-made antipersonnel mines to help defend against Russian advances.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has confirmed that Ukraine will be provided with ‘non-persistent’ mines, which are designed to not pose a long-term threat to civilians. Ukrainian officials believe that increasing the use of land mines could help deter Russia’s human wave attacks in the eastern part of the country, where most civilians have already been evacuated.

While over 160 countries, including Ukraine, have signed a treaty banning the use of land mines due to their indiscriminate nature and long-lasting threat to civilians, major players like the US, Russia, China, and others have not agreed to the ban. Russia, in particular, has reportedly deployed anti-tank and antipersonnel mines extensively in the parts of Ukraine it has seized.

In light of these developments, DW spoke to Domitilla Sagramoso from King’s College London about what the US-supplied landmines could offer Ukraine in terms of defense capabilities. Additionally, former UK Defense Attaché John Foreman discussed Russia’s latest threats following Ukraine’s use of ATACMS rockets on Russian soil.

The situation between Ukraine and Russia continues to intensify, with the use of land mines and other military tactics adding a new dimension to the conflict. As tensions continue to rise, the international community will be closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
