UK’s PM Starmer calls on Putin to accept Trump’s proposed Ukraine ceasefire

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken a bold step in calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine, put forward by former US President Donald Trump. In a virtual summit, Starmer discussed the need for military aid for Ukraine and plans for a peace-keeping force to be stationed in the country in the event of a ceasefire.

During the summit, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the importance of US assistance in maintaining peace in Ukraine. She highlighted the US as the “best guarantee for peace in Europe” due to their status as the biggest military power in the world. Baerbock also stressed the need for European countries to provide security guarantees along with the US, pointing out that a united front would be stronger against potential adversaries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

Political analyst Domitilla Sagramoso, Senior Lecturer in Security and Development at King’s College London, commented on Starmer’s efforts to lead a ‘coalition of the willing’ to address potential security gaps left by the US. This coalition would involve multiple countries coming together to support Ukraine and ensure peace in the region.

The call for Putin to accept the proposed ceasefire and the discussions around military aid and peace-keeping forces indicate a heightened focus on resolving the conflict in Ukraine and preventing further escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war. Starmer’s leadership in bringing global leaders together to address the situation is a significant move towards finding a peaceful solution.
