Top 200 Rock Hits: Today’s Most Played Worldwide – Spotlight on "Up Where We Belong"
In the world of rock music, few collaborations are as iconic as "Up Where We Belong," performed by the powerhouse duo Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. This song, synonymous with deep emotional resonance and soaring melodies, not only captured the hearts of millions upon its release but also solidified its place in cinematic history as the theme song for the 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman." The film, starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger, has become a classic, and its themes of love and perseverance are beautifully complemented by this heartfelt ballad.
Joe Cocker, hailing from Sheffield, England, is renowned for his distinctively gritty voice and soulful interpretations. His career launched in the 1960s, and he quickly became a beloved figure in rock music, releasing unforgettable hits such as "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "You Are So Beautiful." Cocker’s dynamic stage presence and powerful vocals have earned him numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award in 1983 for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Sadly, the music world mourned the loss of Cocker in December 2014, but his legacy continues to inspire artists and fans alike.
On the other hand, Jennifer Warnes, an accomplished American singer-songwriter, has an impressive body of work that spans multiple genres. Warnes gained prominence in the 1970s and is celebrated for her emotive style, both in her solo career and as a collaborator with other artists like Leonard Cohen. Her partnership with Cocker on "Up Where We Belong" showcased her ability to convey deep emotion, and together they created a timeless classic that resonates with audiences around the globe.
"Up Where We Belong" climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in 1982, marking a career highlight for both artists. The song speaks to themes of love and transcendence, capturing the euphoric feelings that come with deep connection. In a unique twist, the accompanying music video integrates scenes from the 1986 blockbuster "Top Gun," adding an exhilarating visual layer that enhances the emotional weight of the lyrics. This infusion of fighter jet sequences not only underscores the song’s soaring ambition but also reinforces its place in popular culture.
As we present "Up Where We Belong," we invite you to immerse yourself in this compelling fusion of powerful music and evocative visuals. This track not only stands as a monumental achievement in rock history but also continues to resonate with new generations, reminding us all of the heights love can reach when we dare to soar.

I remember the song was a hit just after I graduated from High School in 1982, and it was part of what inspired me to join the Navy. This was filmed in the general part of the state where my first duty station was, at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
I've read the ending scene was filmed in the actual paper mill in Port Townsend, and when he carried her out, the actual workers there spontaneously started clapping and cheering–it wasn't in the script, and then the actors who played her friend and mother joined in.
About 2 years ago my wife and I drove up and visited some of the shooting locations for a day trip. Much of it is still there, but somehow it looks a little different in the movie. But, I guess after 40 years… I just can't believe it has been this long. Where did the time go?
What a beautiful wonderful love song, I love you my wonderful darling Jim, God couldn't of given me a better man to love or to be loved by. We will always be together, I'm just a few steps behind you, RIP.
"Up Where We Belong"
Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When it's real, I keep it alive
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below
Up where the clear winds blow
Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives, out there to find
The road is long
There are mountains in our way
But we climb a step every day
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow
Time goes by
No time to cry
Life's you and I
Alive today
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world we know
Where the clear winds blow
Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Stull get a tear run down my cheek when I hear this tune and 52?
The 80s/90s were magical, especially in music. The best Brazilian bands and artists formed, internationally great musicians. Legião, Paralamas, Titãs, Barão, Cazuza, Capital Inicial, Ira, Ultraje, Zero, Blitz, Lobão, Lulu Santos, Semper Livre, None of Us, Biquini, Djavan… Eric Clapton, Aha, Dire Straits, Supertramp, simply red, the police, Elton John, INXS, Tears for fears… Also in the cinema, like ET, enjoying life crazy, the Goonies, the lost boys, back to the future, ghostbusters, top gun, i want to be big, a badass cop, deadly weapon, indiana jones, the spell of aquila… Series, Wonder Years, miami vice, pirated tv, dragon cave, law angels, macgyver, the cat and the mouse, unlimited frames, the hunks, Friends We really had fun with an Atari with just one button, or playing 'button', cards, killer, month, adedanha, pique… Beautiful memories, of holidays at grandmother's house, meeting friends, parties dancing to 'slow music', the first discoveries, the first kiss, drunkenness, adventures, etc. It is impossible to translate all the memories into this space, but without a doubt this music was present, contributing to these years being incredible.
I’m a 97 baby and still appreciate this and the entirety of the 80s for being one of the last great decades. Mastering is beautiful and performances thoughtful unlike today.
Still feel a tear run down my cheek when I watch this and hear this song and I'm 52 X

Is it just me, or was music better back then and were their voices better?
