Urban foraging for food – Fresh, tasty and free | DW Documentary
More and more city dwellers are collecting food in the asphalt jungle. They harvest herbs by the roadside and grow wild vegetables in cracks in the concrete. For these modern foragers and hunters, the food is free, tasty and more varied than in the supermarket.
Christian Amys is an urban foraging professional. He forages for fresh food in his hometown of Brighton. For him, the English coastal city is an urban Garden of Eden. Christian finds wild vegetables and herbs in places where most people would never expect to find food. The 42-year-old only spends a few pounds a week on food from the supermarket: “I want to be independent and don’t like to rely on the supermarket. I like to forage on my doorstep because it’s nice to know where my food comes from.”
Christian Amys worked as a top chef for 20 years before becoming an urban forager. Today, he shows others where to find wild fennel, hogweed, pineapple weed and dandelion heads and how to use them in food preparation. Christian now even supplies top restaurants and cocktail bars with his wild delicacies.
Alexis Goertz also looks for her food on the roadside and in parks. The Canadian has lived in Berlin for over 10 years. She preserves what she collects using the centuries-old technique of fermentation. Whether it’s evening primrose capers, wild garlic kimchi or goutweed sauerkraut – for Alexis, fermentation is about more than just preservation: “Above all, fermentation makes food tastier and easier to digest. And I’ve just become addicted to it.”
Alexis regularly invites people to join her on urban herb walks and explains what’s edible – and what’s poisonous. The 33-year-old is all about rediscovering nature in the city: “Berlin is fantastic for foraging for food. The diversity is immense. Not just among the people, but also in nature.”

People don't notice whats growing around them unless they are told to look. And once you start looking oh man the variety in nature is astonishing.

Marinade your tempe, coat it in batter and then deep fry.
It's pretty save if you collect in form the village street side. But from city street side?
tempe mostly found in Indonesian dishes
And they’re so slim, fit and healthy looking. Go figure!
In the modern world, we hunt for food in supermarkets.
I wouldnt dare eating those plants, they are constantly exposed to toxic fumes, maybe a dog peed on it or someone used herbicides.. not worth the risk,
Bakit di magtanim.. para di na maghanap Jan sa gilid ng kalsada
You have to be careful because they will spray the “bushes” to kill them. At least in Toronto, Canada that's what happens even on the trails where wild berries grow.
as Indonesian, I eat tempe everyday just like Italian eat cheese.
They should visit Indonesia. But i definitely would not eat anything near pollutants.
Southeast Asia and South America would be heaven to these people. People in these parts of the world basically live off the land pay little to no cost on housing or have monthly expenses.
street salad sometimes gets you high in Berlin.
They are training you in the things to come
Yeh I remember tests on wild salad, berries from major german cities in early 90' and lvl of lead, h.matels, toxicity was way beyond scale even so they all taste nice and crunchy..so I will strongly advise to not go for greenery vegetarian option from you public garden in the middle of city..
So, natives have to forage from the side of the roads while the "New Germans" are served free meals in their 4-star hotel beds they never paid for?
Problem is these little flowers and leaves dont do it for me, sure i could maybe do without meat, but then i would at least need some good veggies and fruits! not this random assortment of weeds that i feed to my rabbit
Good job 30 kcals are collected, only left to replace another1970 kcals for a daily norm
我只在森林裏發現藍莓🫐之類的水果,很甜很新鮮😊但是蔬菜需要有知識知道哪些可以吃,在我看來都是草😂
