The European Parliament has awarded this year’s prestigious Sakharov Prize to Venezuelan opposition leaders Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez. The prize recognizes their unwavering dedication to fighting for democracy and representing the people of Venezuela amidst ongoing political turmoil.
Machado and Gonzalez have been at the forefront of the opposition movement in Venezuela, advocating for human rights, freedom of expression, and fair elections in the face of authoritarian rule. Their courage and resilience in the face of adversity have made them symbols of hope for the Venezuelan people and inspired others around the world.
The Sakharov Prize, named after Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, is awarded annually by the European Parliament to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the fight for human rights and democracy. Previous recipients include Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, and the Belarusian opposition movement.
