Veterans Call Flag Removal ‘Provocative’ Amidst Diplomatic Tensions
In a move that has ignited outrage among veterans and politicians alike, the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen removed dozens of Danish flags displayed in front of the building. These flags were placed as a tribute to Danish soldiers who lost their lives during the NATO mission in Afghanistan, honoring their sacrifice in a conflict that has profoundly shaped international relations over the past two decades.
The removal of the flags took place on Wednesday morning, captured on video and rapidly circulated on social media, stirring a wave of condemnation. The flags had been displayed as a direct response to comments made by former President Donald Trump, who recently suggested that soldiers from non-U.S. NATO countries had “stayed a little back” from the fighting in Afghanistan. His remarks have been met with significant backlash, particularly from those who served alongside their American counterparts during the tumultuous conflict.
An embassy spokesperson defended the action, claiming that there was “no ill intent” behind the decision to take down the flags. However, this explanation did little to calm the storm of discontent that followed. Veterans’ representatives expressed their dismay, labeling the act as disrespectful to those who served and sacrificed their lives in service. The sentiment among the veteran community is that such gestures matter greatly and should reflect the honor deserved by their fallen comrades.
Political figures in Denmark have also weighed in, expressing their discontent with the embassy’s actions. Many see the removal of the flags not just as a diplomatic misstep, but as a failure to recognize the collective sacrifices made by NATO allies in a mission that was anything but easy.
As the fallout continues, the incident underscores the delicate nature of international relations and the weight of historical sacrifices. The Danish public, along with their military community, is watching closely to see how the U.S. Embassy addresses growing tensions and whether this act will lead to a shift in diplomatic discourse between the two nations.
The removal of the flags, deeply symbolic in its essence, stands as a provocative reminder in an already complex geopolitical landscape. As discussions around the NATO alliance and its commitments evolve, so too will the conversations surrounding the respect and recognition of sacrifices made by soldiers from all member nations.

Close embassies bring people home. Disrespect from Danes. How many Americans died fighting in the wars in Europe and across the world protecting a Free World. Do you respect that. As an American I say fight your own wars and butt out of America. America for Americans.
Just adding to this, then Denmark was the only Nordic country not being invited to join Trump's new Board of Peace (or perhaps rather Bored of Peace).
Norway, Sweden and Finland have obviously declined the offer.
Danish occupators killed in Afganistan ?
You can't trust the US.
The fraudulent characters seem to dominate his leadership role and distorting it.
USA is killing their own citizens…why anyone would expect for them to have respect for others?
If it has been in normal circumstances Danes would have accepted the excuse. Problem is ALOT of Danes don't trust the US at all anymore. The relationship between the US govenment and the Danish public is so badly broken that I can't see how the American should be able to fix it in the next 30-50 years. There is been so many bad comments from the US towards Greenland, Denmark, Canada etc that we simply will not put up with anything anymore. Everything the US does feels like a huge disrespect.
Denmark and Europe are irrelevant; unless Denmark don’t want a smoke ; the USA don’t care
Denmark don’t wanna be Iran ; Denmark have no right on Greenland
US needs to get banned from NATO and their European bases to be removed
America now "allowing the Danish flag, in Denmark" ….think about that for a moment. 'merican acceptionalism is beyond ridicoulous.
The USA don’t need nato ; American military can do all what other countries do u fools ; Trump is deliberately trying to release the USA from nato and a provocation from Europe or Denmark or Canada is exactly what Trump wants to have an excuse to use USA military
If it wasn't 'ill intent', then there only one explanation left: STUPIDITY!
AND, unfortunately … that might be the reason.
The US ambassador during Trump's first period, Carla Sands, was nothing but a disgraceful bootlicker, and the current, Ken Howery, is known to be a storm/tornado chaser.
By removing the flags, he surely called for a storm being the 'incumbent' Ambassador – and, for sure, showed the Danish veterans and civil population that he is both 'incompetent' and has a petty mindset.
This provocation is so clear, Trump makes a false comment that the other NATO countries did not participate in the hard battles, Danish veterans then put up flags in a public area in front of the embassy with the names of those who fought and died in these actions.
Let's get a fact straight, Trump and his ambassadors just can't stand to see and hear the truth, and that's why the flags were deliberately removed by them, and as it ALWAYS is with Trump's regime, they come up with false stories that they were removed because the embassy cleans up in front of the embassy every day, this comment is a big joke.
If the embassy wants to right this wrong, the ambassador and all embassy staff should leave. Keep the embassy closed until an adult capable of respect is in the White House.
I don't know about other countries but in mine people adopted the graves of fallen foreign soldiers that died in the world wars and maintain them and honour them with flowers. And these Americans in that embassy and/or current government are bothered by 44 flags in front of their Danish embassy ? Pathetic.
lmao imagine living in a timeline where usa is running psychological warfare on DENMARK
who cares. How does eu explain it's support of Israeli regime genocide?
EU and their victorian sensibilities
For anyone not Danish: Besides the veteran thing, the Dannebrog is a BIG deal in Denmark. We fly it arguarbly even more than the Americans fly Old Glory. There's the story that it's the oldest flag continously used but it's also a big part of Danish identity. When the Germans invaded during world war 2, it became tradition to decorate Christmas trees with the flag. During the German occupation of Schleswig-Holstein after the war of 1864, Danish farmers actually bred a "protest pig" that has red fur with a white stripe because the Dannebrog was outlawed. It's also tradition to fly the flag on birthdays.
TL;DR Danes REALLY REALLY like their flag, it's not just about veterans
The Danish people have every right to be mad about this. This US citizen is extremely mad that these flags were removed. This is no way to treat an ally and I I'm very sorry that anyone representing the US would do something this despicable
Hi, I'm seven years old. Can you connect me with the White House so that I can provide them with common sense advice regarding international diplomacy?
The Danes planted flags in front of the American embassy in order to provoke the Americans.
And then they are now saying that they were provoked when the Americans reacted as expected.
These little games to smear the USA are pathetic.
Europe’s biggest blunder was making an enemy of the most powerful country on earth which used to be the guarantor of strategic defense.
It seems that Europe has forgotten the lessons of the past and history is repeating itself.
That’s ok.
🇺🇸
USA needs to fully withdrawal from Europe, remove all embassies!! F EU F Europe
It might ordered by that yellow bloat, but the USA embassy still the one doing it, thus its very disapointing gesture
DJT does not respect any soldiers who have fought for the United States. Neither American nor Danish.
An incomprehensible act on the part of the US, I have been to Denmark several times and I completely understand their feelings, it is really sad how the US behaves today, but I also know that many Americans do not agree with this and are also sad about it, here in the CZ they say that "the worst is a collision with an ox" I salute all the good people in Denmark.
You are missing one IMPORTANT fact, the first 44 flags were put up by the Danish veterans organization, one for each killed Danish soldier. Each flag bore the NAME of one of the killed soldiers, so the embassy knew what they meant.
The flower beds are set up on public land and by the public, so they do not belong to the embassy.
They have now "allowed" the flags to stay, but the new flags are just ordinary party flags, the original meaning is gone.
We don't need "allowed" they just need to keep their SMALL orange hands away
I live on the other side of the country, but I have registered for the demonstration.
A bully doesn't stand down, until he gets a bloody nose.
Denmark has military law still in place shoot first ask quesion after. Go to greenland to US base give troops option leave or be shot.
Every day…every day, the US administration does an egregious something or other that would bring down a leader, a party, a government in different times. I dare to wonder how long this can go on before something happens where the options, patience and steady heads run out.
Why planting danish flags in US Embassy? What a childish behaviour!
I hate the US from the bottom of my heart. Will never go there again as long as I live. From Denmark.
I stand with Denmark. I am Canadian.
Many countries should expel the US diplomats.
Send the ambassador packing immediately.
Tell the staff to pack up and leave.
Remove all US military personnel from your soil.
Close the US embassy permanently.
This will not further the strain between the US and the Kingdom of Denmark. That strain has pretty much already reached its maximum level unless an actual conflict breaks out. Nobody here trusts the US anymore and noone outside the officials who has to keep up appearences, beleives the US to be an ally anymore.
If it makes Danes and other NATO members feel better, just remember that Trump denigrates American veterans, too. I'm a veteran and have never been so embarrassed to be American as I am under Trump.
Armed americans would storm the Danish embassy if their staff removed american flags from in front of the building in Washington.
From a proud EU citizen, the US has reached vomit level.
JFC. On behalf of all of us decent people fighting back against the orange one’s tyranny, we are so so sorry- true Americans respect the sacrifice our friends have made for us. Sadly there has been a proliferation of amerikkkans in recent years. We’re working on that. It’s gonna take a minute.
But rest assured, more than half of us are just as horrified at this action and have nothing but respect for your honourable people, especially your veterans and those killed in action fighting as a US ally. Our hearts break at the disrespect. 🇩🇰 ❤
Maybe a security guard removed the flags, seems like the embassy has a security problem, surveillance would show who did
Does Denmark really want more US troops in Greenland?
The usa embassy shouldent have a say in "allowing the flags" on public area, NOT embassy soil. If the usa want to right the wrong usa should pay 100.000 EUR (because i dont want usa currency) to everyone in the kingdom of denmark, like they tried to bribe everyone on greenland with 100.000 usa dollers.
