Nigerians are continuing to express their anger and frustration towards the government, with protests turning violent in some cities across the country. The unrest has left at least three people dead, prompting police in Nigeria to be put on red alert. Some major cities like Abuja and Kano have experienced clashes between police and demonstrators, as well as incidents of looting. Despite the initial chaos, the protests seemed to have calmed down in the early hours of Friday, though demonstrations were still expected to carry on.
The root of the protests stems from President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, which many Nigerians believe have led to high inflation, a weakened currency, and increasing hardships for ordinary citizens. Protest organizer Abiodun Sanusi highlighted the struggles facing the Nigerian people, stating, “Things have been expensive in the market, Nigerians are suffering, Nigerians are hungry, Nigerians are angry.” The unemployment rate, insecurity in both the north and south, and overall dissatisfaction with the government have fueled the anger behind the protests.
As tensions continue to rise, the government may call upon military assistance to help quell the unrest. The situation remains volatile, with protesters adamant about voicing their grievances to the federal government. The clashes between police and demonstrators serve as a stark reminder of the deep-seated frustrations and discontent that many Nigerians are feeling towards their leadership.
