The recent mechanics’ strike at WestJet has caused chaos for thousands of travelers during one of Canada’s busiest long weekends. With at least 235 flights cancelled, many people have found themselves stranded due to the work stoppage. Despite the Canadian federal government’s efforts to prevent the strike through binding arbitration, the situation escalated quickly. WestJet claims that the union rejected a deal that would have made the maintenance engineers the highest paid in Canada, leading to the current standoff. The government is now stepping in to mediate between the two parties in hopes of finding a resolution to the crisis.
