Why Saudi Arabia’s $5B LIV Golf Experiment Failed
In a substantial twist within the realm of sports investment, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has announced its withdrawal of funding from LIV Golf, effective at the conclusion of the 2026 season. This decision marks a significant turning point, signaling the end of a bold but ultimately unsuccessful venture that sought to disrupt the traditional golf landscape dominated by the PGA Tour.
The Rise of LIV Golf
LIV Golf emerged onto the scene with ambitious goals and substantial financial backing, aiming to create a competitive format that could rival the long-established PGA Tour. Launching with a star-studded roster that included renowned golfers like Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau, the league attracted considerable attention from both fans and the media. With lavish prize funds and a fresh approach to tournament structure, LIV Golf initially generated excitement, drawing players looking for new opportunities and lucrative contracts.
The Downfall
However, despite the initial enthusiasm, the venture began to falter. Several factors contributed to its downfall. First and foremost was the backlash from the golfing community and fans alike, where LIV Golf faced accusations of “sportswashing,” attempting to obscure human rights issues in Saudi Arabia through sporting investments. The polarization of opinions alienated potential supporters and created an uphill battle in building a sustainable audience.
Furthermore, the league struggled with operational challenges, including navigating broadcasting rights and timing conflicts with existing PGA tournaments. While LIV Golf aimed to attract a more casual audience with its innovative formats, its execution often fell short, leading to viewer disengagement and a lack of consistent engagement from fans.
A Reckoning for Athletes
The impending exit of Saudi funding presents an uncertain future for the star players who chose to join LIV Golf. Many now face a reckoning; returning to the PGA Tour may not be as straightforward as anticipated. Players such as Koepka and DeChambeau will need to navigate the complex landscape of professional golf in a post-LIV world. While some players have expressed a desire to return to the PGA Tour, the path forward includes reconciling with a golfing community that may remain skeptical of their past decisions.
What’s Next?
As LIV Golf transitions into this new phase, the implications for both the players and the sporting landscape are profound. The league’s failure underscores the challenges of disrupting established sports hierarchies, especially when public sentiment and cultural perceptions play a critical role.
The future of professional golf may evolve in unpredictable ways as former LIV players seek to reclaim their spots and the PGA Tour continues to respond to the pressures of competition. Ultimately, the ambitious experiment serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-stakes investments in the realm of sports, highlighting that passion, integrity, and community support remain at the core of what defines successful athletic endeavors.

1:36 It’s funny to see Ameircan's accusing human rights abusing where their country did much worse.
They forgot to tell you the Saudies bought the PGA.
Not a problem. The LIV players can pool their fortunes and sponsor the Khashoggi Memorial Tour.
I didn’t even know this existed but I’m glad it failed
Greed, torture and trump. The LIV mission statement.
Easy why it failed. TRUMP got involved. 😂😂
Another vanity project of the Saudis bites the dust!
This has nothing to do with the war in Iran. Nothing at all.
The whole Saudi sports washing argument aside……How can you fault some of the players for taking contracts that basically mean generational money for them and their families? LIV caused the PGA to increase purses for the players. The players benefitted. Rory McElroy was used by the PGA to speak out against LIV and then it's revealed that the PGA and LIV have been negotiating for two years over amalgamating!!! Talk about the PGA throwing one of its top players under the bus. Listen to Jon Rahm about his decision. Makes sense.
America has done way worse than anything Saudi Arabia ever did
I’m glad this happened…and all the golfers that left to go there, should stay there and be ban from the PGA Tour !!
I hope liv fails completely.. It is destroying traditional golf . Next they will have pole dancing..
Because its frogging hot as h e 11 there?
TGL is a better watch that LIV
How do those golfers feel now? Karma 😊
Lol a lot going on here. All my 2 cents could afford is that money rule all. Suspension of belief, to say the least, will ensure they all land on they feet!
Hahahah! Good!
No more BLOOD MONEY !!!
Took too long.
Everyone is acting like that they wouldn’t take Saudi’s money .. who cares
You can't buy friends. But, you can rent them.
had to comment….
There was no rise 😂 but the fall happened haha
Dear WSJ producers / editors: you're showing a factually incorrect graphic from 0:23 to 0:30.
The PGA Tour is entirely separate from the PGA Tour: the former split from the PGA of America in 1968.
I'm a golf nerd, no doubt, but still. Don't be putting out misinformation.
It's clear America doesn't have ideals
Everything rump touches..dies!
“Its like death golf” hollly nerd😂😂😂
Poor LIV golfers that have $150M in blood money. Surprised they didn't mention soccer and Formula 1 in the sports washing. Saudi investment fund offered Messi and Mbappe $1B each and they said no.
The streaming platforms/lack of convenience in finding the events also made for huge issues. I could never understand how it could be so inconvenient to watch live and after the fact. Huge miss.
It failed because of the PGA.
Donald Trump was involved in this. Everything he touches gets destroyed.
Good effing riddance!
The richness of USA considering themselves cleaner as sporting hosts. Saudi aren’t good but USA claiming to be better, an a non-American, is just ironic.
LIV Golf was BORING 😴! They “showed more shots”, in other words, tons of pointless shots from players out of contention, even at the end of tournaments.
It’s sad, because it was a good event.🇦🇺
I think we have all missed the point. L1V was never intended to be a viable tour. It was a scheme. A scheme for the Saudi Sovereign Fund to manipulate the PGA into giving the fund control or partial control of the PGA. It failed. The fund has now bailed out and abandoned the pros it bribed to join L1V. The whole thing stinks of greed.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the current product. Sure LIV made a few changes, had a more liberal atmosphere that sometimes got out of hand but the PGA wasnt broken.
They still have WWE
Bin should be replaced.
Say it, Dump ruined it like he did the USFL!!!
The hypocrisy of that lady saying it goes against American ideals is laughable. America is built and perpetuates greed and that the end justifies the means and all that counts is the money, this is what LIV represents, I would argue that LIV is the perfect embodiment of America, a soulless bully that will run over anything in its path to get more of what it wants regardless of the lasting effects or casualties. US Citizens you are so brainwashed it’s sickening.
Even the brand name itself–LIV Golf–was a big mistake. What a terrible brand name to compete with the venerable PGA.
This video will get more views then all liv golf events did combined…that's what went wrong lol real golf fans want to watch players play on historical courses that they know, and have watched great players before win on before. History and prestige can't be bought, it's earned.
So Saudi Arabia's LIV Golf had the longevity of "The Line".
You see the pattern.
It wasn't the financial losses that killed this PR stunt designed to turn focus away from who actually funded the 9/11 attacks and the murdered & dismembered a Washington Post journalist. What really did LIV Golf in was conducting business with dumb Donnie, that's the kiss of death.
They're trying to do the same in Boxing with " Zuffa Boxing " / TKO .
They want to monopolize boxing.
They're trying to make boxing have the same model as the UFC , where the UFC controls everything and the fighters don't have any leverage.
Hope all the star players can go back to the PGA tour. LIV has always been weird to me.
PGA didn’t need to modernize.
Football (soccer) selling tournaments to Saudi Arabia destroys those tournaments. No crowds, no soul, unfair advantages. Vanity projects for MBS and his twisted visions.
GOLF succcccks!
Correction: We used the PGA of America logo instead of the PGA Tour logo. We are in the process of updating this video.
