US President-elect Donald Trump has once again made headlines with his latest announcement regarding new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada has raised concerns among experts and analysts.
In a press conference, Trump attributed the need for these tariffs to the lack of action from neighboring countries in preventing the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States. In addition to targeting Mexico and Canada, Trump also directed his attention towards China, urging the country to impose the death penalty for drug smugglers. He threatened to implement a 10% tariff on Chinese goods if his demands were not met.
However, data from the US government itself reveals that the majority of illegal drugs entering the country are smuggled by Americans at legal border crossings, casting doubt on the effectiveness of these tariffs in addressing the issue.
Experts like Claudia Schmucker from the German Council on Foreign Relations, Jacob Gunter from the Mercator Institute for China Studies, and Kate Ferguson from DW Business have weighed in on the potential impact of these tariffs on global trade relations.
As Trump’s term in office comes to a close, his decisions regarding trade and tariffs continue to be a point of contention and scrutiny. The repercussions of these latest tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China remain uncertain, leaving many to question the rationale behind Trump’s actions.

25% import taxes! 😂
America is so screwed
DW needs to do honest reporting. The anchor lost all credibility in the first minute when stating that "most illegals drugs are smuggled by Americans," which as someone who lives in Mexico I can tell you is simply not true or even close to true. The VAST majority are smuggled in by Mexicans.
IM HOT FOR TEACHER SONG GERMANY ENGLAND HARRY POTTER COLLEGE SCHOOL ALL THINGS MUST PASS ALBUM
When will you people realize that nobody cares about WTO rules anymore: Americans don’t care, Chinese don’t care, only Europeans keep yapping about it and nobody else is listening

The era of slave lavor abuse is coming to a end the era of American made is coming…..
Let us boycott USA.
It's time for the world to stop taken advantage of the USA. Our taxes will be used for Americans. Trump is a blessing for the American people. Germany better start saving there money because trump will punish them also. What a time to be an American the world could only dream of having a Trump as president 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Western journalism is so lazy. Why can’t they bring a Chinese economist to give a better perspective of how China will respond… Some with better local knowledge not some westerners in Berlin with 3rd hand info.
Impact China , Mexico and Canada will go under very quick 😂😂😂😂
She is pretending to know a lot of things she doesn't really know — about the future, and the totality of the effects of Trump's policies.
Why DW worried? Any country can impose import to their country? we have to competitive. That is how capitalism works
Thank God for giving us Trump
I just bought a ton of toilet paper before the tariffs are imposed.
To the questions: Will Americans, specifically its workers, benefit from tariffs? The bottom line answer is another question: Has the U.S. economy grown faster than the countries it seeks to impose tariffs on? Clearly we are doing great, so the current trade arrangements are to our advantage. The problem in the U.S. is not external, it's internal, the capture of the our increased wealth by the top few percent, while this same group raises the costs of everything. Private equity buys up single family houses, inflating values making it more and more impossible for middle class Americans to buy a home. This forces them into a rental market increasingly controlled by private equity which colludes to jack up rents. This further transfers net wealth to the top percent.
The people who voted for the president elect were sold a lie. Everything they were told is a lie. The U.S. is not an economic disaster, the problem is increasing wealth disparity. This has worsened under all the Republican presidents starting with Reagan but it wasn't address under Democratic presidents, with one exception. Bill Clinton, but most of what he did was return tax rates to pre Reagan amounts which balanced the budget, began rapidly paying down the national debt and delivered tax surpluses.
"For every complex problem, there's a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong." H.L. Mencken.
Frugal living is the solution for consumers. Let us control the urge to buy so we can survive. That's all we can do
When you run out of options and leverages you threaten tariffs. Basically you went belly up, just close American doors, no imports, make iphones yourself, everything yourself, see who is going to cry.
With so-called "experts" like Claudia at the helm, it's no wonder Germany's economy is in the tank…
China, Canada and Mexico have HUGE trade surpluses with the US (so does Germany). With that being the case, IT IS THEY who will lose in a trade/tariff war. PERIOD. Trump knows this and apparently wants to use this BASIC ECONOMIC FACT in dealing with them over non-economic matters, which have national security ramifications.
Self-sufficiency should have been applied to make Americans survive without consuming costly imported goods. Thanks to sanctions, Russia has been putting such measure in place to survive without imported goods.
Why Recount the swing States?!
Trump 'bullet ballots' in swing States = 5-7%
Trump 'bullet ballots' in other RED States = .005%
“Do these Trump bullet ballots actually exist?
Prove me wrong.”

As this is Trump's' last term (by his own admission), he will have 'fun' with his presidency and 'loose cannon' politics will be the norm. The media will love this, and we can all enjoy the 'ride'.
This guy doesnt have a plan because he is a failed businessman who doesn't understand how tariffs work. and his lemmings have no clue either.
He started tariffs in 2017, what brings? More trade deficits and high inflation. He does it again, why? Because he cannot do anything else to show MAGA people he is fighting for them, it's just pathetic.
turnip is a simpleton and only understands simple strategies, any degree of complication should make us easy to defeat economically.
No, no no, no no no. He's putting an extra 10% on China for their role in drugs coming the the US. That's not to say only 10% will be the tariff. 65% (Trade imbalance) + 10% (for lack of action on drugs) = 75% tariff on Chinese goods in the American market.
Trade deficits have been a drain on the US economy for decades. Trump just wants to balance the scales. Any other country would want to do the same.
Nevermind China.
A trade war with CANADA?
Why?
Maybe they could stop allowing imports of drug precursors to Mexico? And show that it has stopped?
The rest of the world is eating popcorn. Most of us are perplexed by Trump voters.
A sex predator and criminal convicted have no credibility therefore he has nothing to offer to the China
Re Trump past deadline for Oct 1st mandatory transition document signing per the
Presidential Transition Act:
Congress needs to write "or else ___" into every law, and this one should have said "or else the election will not proceed" (& specify remedies, alternatives, and deadlines, Etc.)! Consequently, it's not at all transparent what "transactions" may already be in play between Trump, his team, and other parties.💔⚖️😔
Putin would clean up on organized crime and place his criminal organization in place.

China ships 3 times to USA more than USA ships to China. Who will win a trade war 😮
Dear God please deliver us from Trump
Trump is already bargaining with the other countries with his tarrif threats. He can do that, because he is going to lower taxes, resulting not in loss of consumer buying power. The US economy is the most dynamic economy, so they can adjust best to any new situation…
Canada is forced to sell oil to the US for 75% of world price
EU has zero right to complain. Western Europe literally wouldnt exist if it weren't for the US. We own them.
That beard… Omg, so distracting.
Nah, he needs to chill with that. Leave canada alone 😔
"Iilegal tariffs" 😅😅
Trump's tariffs worked in 2016…Biden kept them.
