What it's like to be a working homeless person in Germany | DW Documentary
Working daily to sleep on the street at night? That’s a reality for thousands in Germany, who despite having a job cannot find a place to live.
Attila Kokas works for the Berlin City Mission as a gardener. Denny Wagner is a cook. At an emergency shelter he prepares food for homeless people. For a few months now, Denny has been spending nights in a small, simple hut with no electricity. Attila sleeps on the street, before he makes his way to work in the early hours. Despite having jobs, both men have been unable to find an affordable apartment in Berlin. They share their fate with quite a few people in Germany. In larger cities in particular, the housing market is tight. This hits people emerging from homelessness and earning low wages especially hard. How can they get away from being without a roof?

But you have lovely immigrants Germany, allan snackbars, who work hard night and day. Herzlich willkommen, your chancelor merkel said.
Maybe if they change their passport to syrian that would help them find a house?
Germany is cooked
Europe never had these problems in such numbers. Before open boarders madness
This is crazy. I think they can sleep at their workplaces. That way, they will be able to look after it at night and have a nice place to stay.
this is happening in many parts of the world, tragically.
Germany, a failed state.
Man i feel yah it's tough out there I'm in the same boat, I'm waiting for housing also and struggling on a n low pay jobs.
💔 I'm 😲
You are 6 months of being unemployed away from these guys.
They made this world only for people with money. We are good as long as we work and consume
The capitalist system has failed, fails and will fail in every space in which each of its tentacles is placed. Capitalism manufactures poverty and we are tired of it.
Europe once a garden of earth now a disaster
But people that are not from Germany have a place to live. That's the bigger reason for the housing situation.
I lived in a tent in winter in Berlin many years ago… and it was endlessly cold. It’s a tough life.
I know immigrant who lives from the government and no job!
Just tell them your an Afghan migrant.
In America, many employed and homeless people sleep in their cars in car parks. 😢
Breaks my heart. They are such good people. They work hard and work very unglamorous jobs, probably for low pay as well.
Thank you DW as usual – and big respect for both Danny and Atilla, hope they will find the strength to continue!
Absolutely heartbreaking 😢 could have been me in his shoes if I haven’t had a mini job aside from the full time, So much strength and power to ya mate hope this won’t last very longer you’ll managed to have your dream place to live in.
You know… If people could live together they could share a roof… But there is always trivial fights like house chores, etc.
Don't give up, brothers!!! Let's hope your stories awaken the populace! Human rights! Love thy neighbor!
Germany is mean!
in a communist society. This will never happen.
Communist mean education, healthcare and a roof for everyone.
No particular human beings can hold large resources.
25% of homes sold in California are purchased by private equity firms. That should be illegal.
The working poor. …. the working homeless.
That's one aspect we like to forget when accepting foreign migrants. Do we have a place for them to live?
20 billion euros Germany has sent to Ukraine, could have built homes for all the homeless in Germany.
Heart goes out to the people on the streets. While i never found myself in such a position, a stark contrast from Denmark to Germany was when i spent a week in a hospital in Hamburg. I never had to worry about getting my wallet stolen in Denmark. But in Hamburg another patient made sure the staff kept my passport and wallet safe during my operation. He told me that it was not safe to keep it in the drawer next to my bed while i was in surgery. Having to live like that day to day, being worried about your stuff must be incredibly stressful.
A tragedy created by capitalism. Where maximization of wealth is main objective.
Christ this is mindblowing!!!!
I THOUGHT THIS JUST HAPPENED IN THE US
Germany do better
There go Danny riding the bus to work!!😂😂
Addiction to cigarettes alcohol and narcotics keeps people in a damaged state of mind
