In “Why I Want to Be an NPC,” Hasini Koduri challenges conventional notions of success and individualism through a thought-provoking lens. She juxtaposes the role of a non-player character (NPC) in video games with societal expectations of always being the main character in life’s narrative. Hasini argues that while society glorifies standout achievements, true fulfillment may lie in embracing the stability and kindness associated with being an NPC. She highlights the pressures intensifying from social media and cultural narratives, which often define our self-worth by the opinions of others. By recalling personal experiences, she reveals that the most impactful moments stem from seemingly ordinary interactions rather than grand achievements. Ultimately, Hasini proposes that finding joy in the mundane and prioritizing genuine connections can lead to a more peaceful existence. This TEDx talk urges viewers to reconsider their definitions of success, proposing that lives enriched by kindness and present-moment awareness can be just as valuable—if not more so—than those filled with accolades.

“It’s the idea that being an **NPC (non-playable character)** can feel more freeing than being the main character—less pressure, fewer expectations, and the comfort of simplicity. Instead of chasing constant spotlight and plot twists, an NPC embraces stability, routine, and the quiet joy of supporting roles in life.
