The European Union is currently facing a looming threat from the United States as the two sides engage in talks to re-shape their economic relationships. With a 90-day deadline set by the US to make significant changes, the EU is left wondering whether it will need to utilize its ‘trade bazooka’ against its transatlantic partner.
At the heart of the dispute are goods, but the situation could potentially escalate to impact services as well. This has raised concerns about the implications for consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. To shed light on this complex issue, DW Business spoke with Sophia Busch, Assistant Director at the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomic Center.
The outcome of these negotiations could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy, particularly as the EU and US are key players in international trade. As tensions continue to simmer, it remains to be seen how both parties will navigate this challenging situation and whether a mutually beneficial agreement can be reached.

Trump's reciprocal tariffs are a hard blow to the Chinese 🇨🇳 economy and its global economic structure, making BRI, BRICS, and SCO useless.
Next are pharma tarrifs. EU need to retaliate to this bully
All of this behavior done by trump and the voter base that is in favor of these things are more indicatiors of the American empire and hegemony in decline and implosion.
The trump strategy is to go for a high risk high reward that would try to benefit them only in the short term but very damaging in the long game. Right now within America the protesting is just starting and the fire needs more time to burn until the trade war trump voter base really feels it. If the previous trade war 1.0 tells anything about version 2 of today it indicates the tarrif voter base did not get the desired result they wanted to reshore manufacturing back to American soil. Trade war 1.0 failed and it's why the same thing is happening again. So I do not see negotiations about zero for zero having any chance. What happens after 90 days anyway? Is manufacturing going to reappear back on US soil like magic? My view on what approach Europe should take is to have a cohesive strategy to play the long game. No bilateral arrangements between individual member states and trump. The EU does have the anti coercion agreement and it is a big card if needed. Before EU decides on hitting back with that there should be an equivalent level retaliation first. US started this trade war both times but the world will finish it this time and in the process also finish America entirely because America will finish itself from within.
EU failed to support ukraine.
Very slow in helping ukraine😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
More than 45% dependency on US LNG would mean that we haven't learned anything from the former Russian dependency.
Besides this – how will someone enforce the market to buy more gas than it is needed?
It's all a smokescreen, the US has torn up free trade agreements with 20 countries. The US has no interest in 0% tariffs in both directions. The best the EU can hope for is 0% tariffs on the US and the US applying 10% blanket tariffs plus extra for whatever the dear leader decides. Thinking the US will be reasonable with the EU is absurd.
Trump need money and need it badly. Mutual zero tax does not work on it.
Already cancelled netflix subscription and YouTube premium. I can watch films on local platforms and got news as well (but I have to say getting rid of YouTube for me is really difficult, but I'll get there in a few days)
If EU doesn't sign a free trade treaty in 90 days with we Chinese. We may consider to send tens thousands hypersonic missiles and drones to Russia.
Trump want sacrifice, not a win-win deal. 30 days wont change that. But he could be no longer US president in weeks.
What if US use defense bazooka with their support for NATO and Ukraine conflict as retaliation?
I really hope so ! We are beginning to loose our patience with the constant bullying from fascist ummerrica !!
Oh. We have a trade bazooka. bWell, I guess that takes care of that, then☺
I’m not sure how Europeans can say with any degree of honestly that the EU hasn’t taken advantage of the US Economy for decades.
The EU must say no to the rot of fascism the US has fallen to.
We can make our own platforms and we can make them far better, in time they will be begging us to join
oh yes! Please take away netflix, it's so useless and the quality of shows it offers get worse and worse each year. I won't cry over t.
The EU has nothing. The only products it can export is overpriced cars which fall apart and lose 80% of their value in 3 years.
Are you kidding? The netflix subscription is one of the prime worries of the EU currently? Is this what should be discussed? I sit baffled
I do want to say its discusting how we all ingor Israel killing of people in Palestinia i know i know has nothing to do with this sorry but still. Its pretty discusting 🇳🇱
About the streaming platforms dont worry we can visit tortuga with Jack Sparrow…

Which contry will to defense EU? EU is depending on US for entire defense again Russia
She does not know the answer
ബസൂക്ക
Time form EU services
Also trump will remove troop from EU. Which contry will protect EU?
Patents stop being respected and we build our own digital services ignoring any legal claims from USA. We need to increase our militar capability to protect EU from Russia and from USA. Whatever we do inside EU its not USA patent will business. Like China does.
До планеты начинает доходить слова Путина и Си – США и Англии НЕЛЬЗЯ верить! Вся идеология Англичан это колониальное выжимание ресурсов. Россия всегда предлогала равноправные отношения на взаимном доверии.
European Union haven't cards , unless the Ukrainian – Russia war is endd. Europe now is vulnerable for military and trade war at a time. European leaders should move smartly !!
bazooka is the perfect word slow, innaccurate, old, and massively destructive to all sides getting them burned especially when the us has law about medication that if you wont sell to us your patents dont matter anymore and we came make them domestically for way cheaper especially the price hike you guys give us for insulin
EU have no innovation or natural resources
Peoples now only buying US Chinese Samsung Japanese products
Trump should not impose tariffs on the whole EU , only on individual countries depending on the trade balance and cooperation with China .
Eu still thinks US is their important ally…ha ha aha
Upward inflection talking to vocal fry. Come on people, let's be grown ups.
Trade with the largest consumer market is a privilege. I say the USA 🇺🇸 should cut the EU out of its supply chain immediately! 🇺🇸
AMERICA WILL BE ACQUIRING NEW STATES SOON.
I do not think about the US as allies anymore. I think even dictatorships like China have a more realistic expectation about their partners.
baby Donny can't be trusted, he will sign a deal and then come back the next week claiming that Biden signed it and that it's the worst deal ever
She is very sure about google, Microsoft, Netflix. It’s a hurdle, but on the other hand these are all services that can be replicated and copied far easier than the US idea of bringing manufacturing home the the US. A bit biased are we miss?
Netflix is dogs*** anyways. ZDF Mediathek is free and much better.
Online services can be built in very short time, and EU have to make an alternatives, Twitter alternatives showed how easily people move to new platform.
If the US wants to sell us food it will have to comply with our standards, not theirs. That's all there is to it.
Oh no. Even better I'm off instargam facebook aswell. Happy to ditch they social media.
