In a shocking and tragic incident, a Colorado woman, Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, found herself in the middle of a nightmare when the police car she was handcuffed in was hit by a freight train. The 20-year-old had been pulled over by officers from both the Fort Lupton and Platteville police departments for an alleged road rage incident.
As Rios-Gonzalez sat in the parked police car, Platteville police made the fatal mistake of parking their vehicle directly on the train tracks. An oncoming train was unable to stop in time and collided with the cruiser, flattening it with Rios-Gonzalez still inside.
The entire incident was captured on police bodycam video, bringing to light the series of unfortunate events that led to this tragic outcome. Following the lawsuit that ensued, a settlement of $8.5 million was reached to compensate Rios-Gonzalez for the pain and suffering she endured.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of following proper protocol and ensuring the safety of individuals in police custody. It also highlights the devastating consequences that can result from negligence and poor decision-making.
While no amount of money can truly compensate for the physical and emotional trauma Rios-Gonzalez experienced, this settlement provides some form of justice and closure for the young woman as she continues to heal and move forward from this horrific incident.
