Best Documentary Feature

Weekly Commentary (Updated Jan. 18, 2024): The documentary race is tricky this year because there isn’t an “obvious” frontrunner that has emerged, as seen in previous years. That could bode well for leading contenders such as Netflix’s “American Symphony” or Apple’s “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.” However, in the case of the latter, it won an Emmy Award prior to voting opening, and that could have rubbed some of the branch members the wrong way.
The only film that feels likely to be named is Roadside’s “Beyond Utopia,” which debuted at Sundance one year ago. That leaves some openings for others to slide…
