In 5 Against the House, the moral and psychological complexities of friendship and loyalty are put to the test in the neon-lit underbelly of Reno, Nevada. This 1955 film, propelled by a gripping narrative, explores the consequences of a seemingly harmless intellectual challenge spiraling out of control into a high-stakes heist.
The plot centers around four veterans of the Korean War who, after witnessing a failed casino robbery, become entranced by the idea of committing the perfect heist themselves. Ronnie, played by Kerwin Mathews, catalyzes this thrill-seeking adventure as he devises a meticulous plan—initially intended as an academic exercise with the intention of returning the money afterward. However, the stakes rise when Brick, portrayed by Brian Keith, grappling with the traumatic aftermath of warfare, becomes determined to make the heist a reality.
As the group grapples with their camaraderie and individual motivations, the heist takes a darker turn. Al, played by Guy Madison, plans to marry nightclub singer Kay (Kim Novak), but the gravity of Brick’s need for redemption complicates matters. The film journeys through the tumultuous dynamics of friendship, revealing how unresolved trauma and personal demons can lead to unexpected and often tragic outcomes.
5 Against the House stands out not only as one of the early casino heist films but also as a poignant exploration of the fragile nature of loyalty amid the chaos of post-war mental struggles. The film expertly blends tension with psychological depth, culminating in a gripping narrative that leaves viewers questioning the moral implications of their characters’ actions.

I am into about first 15 minutes of film. It is actually pretty good— the acting is not rushed— very well done, and natural. The regular banter system as between the young men is so very well done— 👍
What year???
Was Kim Novak really singing that song or was it dubbed?

No rule of law or constitutional rights. Unless your a real killer and rule breaker
Excellent Phil Karlson noir. As a young man in Chicago Karlson actually lived the noir life, being a lookout to alert when cops were coming near an illegal booze enterprise. . So he knows!
MUST SEE for noir fans. Some other ace Karlson noirs are 99 River Street, Tight Spot, The Brothers Rico and The Phenix City Story.
respectfully the timeline conflicts with some primary sources
I only gave this a chance when I saw Kim Novak was in it ❤❤ what a beautiful lady x
dude i thought you quit youtube. so glad youre back
I should think that this was a great opportunity for Guy Madison being cast opposite the gorgeous KIM NOVAK, who was rather new at the time, but went on to become a big box-draw in the ensuing years. Guy was also lucky to portray one of Jean Simmons lovers in 'Hilda Crane'. If it wasn't for these movies and his later TV show 'Wild Bill Hickcock', he wouldn't be remembered today.
WOW – this is a stonker of a film! Brian Keith’s portrayal of a PTSD victim was spot-on and nice to see him out of his usual ‘nice guy’ role.
