President Akufo-Addo of Ghana States Security in Sahel has Deteriorated Since French Troops Departed

In a recent interview with FRANCE 24, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed his concerns regarding the security situation in the Sahel region after the departure of French troops last year. Akufo-Addo admitted that the security has worsened since the French troops left, highlighting the challenges faced by countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

President Akufo-Addo also expressed his hope that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger would rejoin the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc. The decision of the military juntas in these countries to withdraw from ECOWAS was seen as a setback, as regional cooperation is crucial in addressing security challenges in the Sahel region.

The Sahel region has been plagued by instability, terrorism, and inter-communal violence in recent years, with extremist groups gaining ground and posing a threat to the security and stability of the region. The departure of French troops has left a security vacuum that needs to be addressed through coordinated efforts by regional and international partners.

As President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for closer collaboration and cooperation among ECOWAS member states to tackle the security challenges in the Sahel, it is clear that the situation in the region remains a top priority for leaders in West Africa. The international community must also step up its efforts to support the countries in the Sahel region in their fight against terrorism and extremism.
