As hurricanes continue to batter the state of Florida, some residents are fed up and looking to make a permanent move away from the hurricane-prone region. With two major hurricanes hitting the state in just a matter of weeks, many are feeling the strain of dealing with the aftermath of these destructive storms.
According to a recent survey, nearly 12 percent of Florida residents are considering leaving the state within the next year due to rising insurance costs and the constant threat of hurricanes. The high cost of insurance and the stress of preparing for and recovering from hurricanes are pushing some residents to seek refuge in more stable regions.
NBC News’ Marissa Parra reports on the growing trend of Florida residents deciding to head north in search of a safer and more secure living environment. With the unpredictability of hurricane season and the increasing frequency of severe storms, it’s no surprise that some are choosing to leave the Sunshine State behind.
As climate change continues to fuel more intense and frequent hurricanes, the decision to leave Florida in search of a more stable environment is becoming more common among residents. While the state has long been a popular destination for retirees and vacationers, the threat of hurricanes is prompting some to reconsider their living situation and make a move to a more hurricane-resistant area.
While Florida has long been known for its beautiful beaches and warm weather, the increasing frequency of hurricanes is driving some residents to seek out safer alternatives. As more and more people look to escape the threat of hurricanes, the real estate market in less hurricane-prone regions may see a boost as Florida residents search for a more secure place to call home.

After 30 years in STP, Florida won. I'm out.
I live in a northern state and am not looking forward to waves of southern state immigrants crossing our border and driving up the prices of everything.
Good Florida is full already 😭
Good luck selling but it's probably to late. The Florida market is about to implode and America can't afford to keep subsidizing it's existence.
I fled Tampa Bay on June 30th after living there for 27 years. Hurricanes were one of the reasons why. I had a gut feeling that this year Tampa Bay’s luck would run out. I warned friends and coworkers to do the same because the area will be unlivable in the very near future due to hurricanes AND the accompanying steep insurance premiums. Many of those same people have been telling me “you were right” or “you got out just in time”.
In a rational world, the government would declare all coastal property public, turn it into parks that would be closed when tropical storms and hurricanes threatened, and forbid private property to be built on them. Such benefit to Americans: everyone could enjoy the coastal beauty when weather allowed, homes wouldn't be destroyed, lives wouldn't be lost, insurance rates would go down, and more, no doubt.
Sunshine state all overhyped. Never understood the fasination with FL. What child was ever excited about hanging out with a bunch of old retired people? Bye
More democrat lies……
I wouldn't like in Florida if they paided me
I think I’ll just deal with the high cost of living in California.
FLORIDA IS JUST NOT WORTH IT 😎
People in Florida are more financially wealthy than most Americans. They should be able to bounce back.
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN …WE LEFT IN 2004 AND NEVER LOOKED BACK BEST DECISION OF OUR LIVES…LOVE AND ALOHA FROM HAWAII 😎
Never left New Jersey as I like the seasons, and we just get mostly coastal storms called “Nor’easter’s” and we’re out and about in a couple of days after the storm. My saying for Florida is “Florida is a nice state to visit, but not a nice state to move to.”
Wise…
Florida should become a wildlife refuge
PLEASE LEAVE!!! We never wanted you all to move here in the first place ❤❤❤
She's beautiful for 60. I feel her pain. I feel for all floridians having to go through that.
First off my heart goes out to everyone affected by the hurricane, it is truly horrific the damage caused by all these hurricanes and I hope they can receive the relief needed. But I moved from Fort Myers, Florida to Utah back in 2013 and it is great not having to worry about hurricanes. I was through hurricane charley and wilma as a kid. I know we are supposed to get hit with a big earthquake at some point so there is that. I guess you aren't fully safe anywhere!
Shes 60. She going to enjoy cooler weather! Seasons changing. Its beautiful. Winters are not like they used to be. Pretty safe. A lovely place is kentucky. Ashland, little snow. Very senic. Not alot of traffic.
77 thousand a year for home insurance for me. Its ridiculous, I don’t know how people without money are surviving
Now it's time to move to Florida. Hurricanes won't be stronger like this for next 50 years at least. lets GO!
This is what happens when you vote against climate change!
Losers I'm staying
Will the snow birds stay where there at 😂
New hampshire,Vermont, the only two places i would consider if i ever went back up north definitely not new york, new jersey, Pennsylvania ect
