In a landmark verdict, former Rwandan doctor Eugène Rwamucyo has been sentenced to 27 years imprisonment by a French court for his role in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The court found him guilty of complicity in genocide, complicity in crimes against humanity, and conspiring to prepare those crimes during the brutal genocide.
This verdict marks a significant milestone in holding individuals accountable for their involvement in the horrifying events that unfolded during the genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis, were killed in a span of just 100 days.
FRANCE 24 correspondent Clement di Roma has been on the ground in Kigali, closely following the trial and capturing the reactions of those affected by the genocide. The trial has been a long and difficult process, bringing painful memories back to the surface for many Rwandans who lived through the atrocities.
The sentencing of Eugène Rwamucyo serves as a stark reminder of the importance of justice and accountability in the face of grave human rights violations. As Rwanda continues to heal and rebuild in the aftermath of the genocide, the verdict sends a powerful message that those responsible for such crimes will be held to account, no matter how much time has passed.
