In Fiji, a team of biologists and fishermen are working together to revive a once-thriving coral paradise in the South Pacific. By replanting coral reefs, they hope to increase fish populations and restore the delicate marine ecosystem.
Coral reefs, like plants, require plenty of space and sunlight in order to thrive. By carefully selecting and planting new coral, the team is creating a habitat that will support a diverse range of marine life.
This important conservation effort is crucial for the health of the oceans and the livelihoods of local fishermen. The success of this project could have far-reaching effects on the entire marine ecosystem in the South Pacific.
Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, this video is part of the landmark documentary series ‘South Pacific’ (2009), which explores the vastness and majesty of the Pacific Ocean. The series highlights the importance of conservation efforts like those taking place in Fiji.
The work being done in Fiji serves as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of the natural world, and the importance of preserving it for future generations. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in the face of environmental challenges.

Eating fish is not necessary for health. The myth was created about eating fish = long life.
WRONG. I've checked statistics – people in Japan consume over 40 kg of fish per year. In Switzerland – only 10 kg. Life expectancy is the same.
But fishing is destroying the ocean. In some places about 95% of fisheries are depleted.
We must reduce fishing by 30-50%. Otherwise fish species will never recover – as it happened with Atlantic cod and some others. They stop fishing – and fish is not there, for decades already.
Fish will die -> ocean will die -> humans will suffer and…
This is our project back in 2008. In 2014, 99% of these corals died in a mass coral beaching event caused by a severe marine heat wave. There was some recovery, but bleaching hit again in 2023 and 2024. Hot water due to climate change is now the leading cause of coral death. So we have changed our focus to rescuing corals and only propagating heat adapted, bleaching resistant corals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG0lqKciXAA

Taking care of the environment is always a good, positive initiative. And in the case of the Fijian fishermen, I would say they're doing a great job, since keeping a coral reef in good conditions is everything but easy and it seems those guys are very delicate when it comes to grabbing the corals.
This is no longer the time for coral gardening using heat sensitive corals, because most of these corals died in 2014. It is the time to save jeopardized heat-adapted corals. This year, we created the largest coral rescue nursery on earth, moving and saving 1,300 corals, while the corals left behind mostly died. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRrAZuimvWU
How beautiful ❤
Very nice 👌 video ❤️ thanks so 👍 much
Thank you very
💚💚💚💚👌🙏
would really like to see it now since this was from 2009
This is our purpose, to care for everything alive on earth.
Great job,thanks
So awesome
amazing work
I can sea wow! 🤯
Great 👍
So cool.
Benedict Cumberbatch has a great voice for this.
sowhatdoyu?
I love this because it reminds me that there’s still hope for this amazing place🥰🥰🥰🥰
I have deep admiration for biologists working to restore our oceans and protect marine animals❤️❤️❤️🪸🪸🪸
We should have an annual holiday dedicated to planting coral and restoring marine habitats🪸🪸🪸
Fish are in coral reef
Esto es lo más importante e interesante que el algoritmo me puso. Como futura bióloga, me recuerda porque elegí la carrera. Es inspirador y amaría que a la mayoría de la sociedad mundial le importará pero bueno.
I've seen a lot of this lately from various organizations and it's very inspiring. However I don't see how this will change anything in the long run, whatever started bleaching the corals in the first place might not even have been solved in many areas and some of those issues might never be solved due to climate reasons out of our control.
Watching your plants growing up is an amazing thing, congratulations on your success 🎉
Corals 🌊, often called the tropical rainforests 🌴 of the ocean, are currently dying and in need of assistance. What you are doing is remarkable 🌟. Keep up the great work! 👍
What happened with the disc
How they get the temperature right?
This is why I don't believe in evolution by natural selection. Why? Because it takes an intelligent, critically-thinking, conscious being to develop and design.
❤❤🎉
Amazing🎉🎉🎉
Thats Wonderfull Keep up the good work and thank you for helping our Earth❤️
Wonderfullll
Əla
God bless Fiji. ❤🇫🇯
Excellent! Such patience!
That rapid level of growth in just six months is incredible. This proves we can restore coral reefs if people put in the effort to make changes. Which is the bigger problem. Climate change is such a complex issue, and doesn't have one solution. But seeing how quickly the coral can grow itself is very hopeful
That’s wonderful!!
This was more than satisfying to hear and see… Thank you❗️
perfect
Sehr schön 🤠
This is humanity at its best.We are guardians of the environment.
❤❤
Thanks human
Que bonito ver os corais crescendo ❤
No lie, I saw that thumbnail and thought an ape was doing it 💀
Love the timelapse🪸 Keep up the graeat work🙌🏻
Bealtiful, what a privilege it must be to work with these
Who knew coral grew so fast.
