Veteran film producer Matt Smith and award-winning commercial and music video director and producer Dan Gedman have joined forces to launch Highway 10, a financier and production company. The partners say that their new enterprise will focus on making high quality, filmmaker-driven movies that are cost effective and commercially appealing. The goal is to attract top talent who operate in the indie film sphere, who can make concept-driven films across multiple genres. Highway 10 will operate in both Los Angeles and Kansas City.
Shared regional roots have something to do with the venture’s moniker — Smith and Gedman named the company as a nod to the highway that took them from their hometown of Kansas City to college together at the University of Kansas. After college, Smith started his career at the Border Webb Chervin Silbermann Agency and Revolution Studios before going on to work as an executive at Sean Bailey’s Ideology Inc., Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Offspring Entertainment and Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures. He was also the head of production and development for Circle of Confusion. His diverse film producing career has ranged from studio blockbusters to small budget Indies and festival films. Along with Disney’s “Maleficent” franchise, Smith’s credits include MGM’s musical remake of “Valley Girl,” Netflix’s family adventure “Rim of The World,” gonzo action movie “Mayhem,” two films in the “Step Up” franchise and Wayfarer Studios’ upcoming action-comedy “Code 3.”
