Ryan Borgwardt, the Wisconsin man who allegedly faked his own death while kayaking in Lake Michigan, made his first court appearance today after returning to the United States. Borgwardt sparked a massive search and rescue operation after he was reported missing on July 28th, prompting a multi-agency response that spanned over 18 hours.
The 40-year-old kayaker was found unharmed on a beach in Door County, Wisconsin, after an extensive rescue effort that involved the U.S. Coast Guard, local law enforcement, and volunteer search teams. Borgwardt reportedly staged his disappearance in an attempt to start a new life and escape his personal troubles.
During his court appearance, Borgwardt faced charges of false alarm, a misdemeanor crime that carries a maximum penalty of up to $10,000 in fines and 9 months in jail. The judge set a cash bond at $1,000 and ordered Borgwardt to surrender his passport and refrain from possessing any firearms while the case is pending.
Borgwardt’s actions have been met with outrage and condemnation from the community, with many questioning the motive behind his elaborate hoax. The court case is expected to shed light on the circumstances leading up to Borgwardt’s decision to stage his own disappearance and the impact it had on the resources and efforts of those involved in the search.
As the legal proceedings continue, residents and authorities are left to ponder the repercussions of Borgwardt’s actions and consider the implications for future search and rescue operations. It remains to be seen what consequences Borgwardt will face for his alleged deception and how his case will be resolved in the coming weeks.

welcome back to the good old USA
I think I missed exactly what it is that he did that was illegal. What's wrong with disappearing off the grid and going to Europe? Not his problem the sheriff spent $40,000 looking for him. Unless you're underage or a fugitive from justice, "escape" is not illegal. Why is he walking into court with belly chains and prison jumpsuit and then let go on a $500 signature bond? He shouldn't be found guilty of anything, unless of course, he was trying to cash out on that insurance policy he took–which is probably not a misdemeanor.
I almost feel like he blew through all his money while he was with his sidecheck and thats why he came home. It had nothing to do with his family cause if he loved them that much then they wouldn't have had them worry all that time thinking he was dead.
why he come back at all?
Back in time to spend Christmas with the family. A happy ending for all. 🎄
Probably chasing an online love. Smh
Maybe he watched a movie too much.
You just can't go to the store for milk and disappear like you used to.
Ookay?? Government got way too much time on their hands and way too much money… Plus time to meddle with other countries affairs and yet no money for the poor? Just to the industrial complex right because they love war = profits 🙂 USA USA USA! 🇺🇸
Shouldn't have came back, Vito
Cry me a river.
