Dominic LeBlanc Becomes Canada’s New Finance Minister Following Freeland’s Resignation

Just hours after Chrystia Freeland resigned from her position in cabinet, Dominic LeBlanc, a long-time Liberal cabinet member, was swiftly sworn in as Canada’s new finance minister. LeBlanc, who has been a member of cabinet since 2015, now takes on the role of minister of finance and intergovernmental affairs after being sworn in at Rideau Hall on Monday.

Freeland, who previously held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, announced her resignation earlier in the day. In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Freeland explained that she felt the only “honest and viable path” was for her to step down from her role in the cabinet after Trudeau expressed that he no longer wanted her to serve as finance minister.

The quick transition of power to LeBlanc signals a shift in leadership within the Canadian government, as he takes on the responsibilities of overseeing the country’s finances and managing intergovernmental affairs. With Freeland’s departure and LeBlanc’s swearing-in, Canada is entering a new chapter in its economic management under the leadership of its new finance minister.
